Last Days for Mercury?

Maurader
I hate to say “I told you so”, but in January of 2006 I asked then Ford CEO Bill Ford Jr. why they had not canned the Lincoln and Mercury brands in order to focus squarely on Ford. Bill responded by claiming that the three brands worked very well together, and seemed pretty dismissive of the idea to streamline the brand portfolio. (Read the Q&A on Time.com)

Shortly thereafter, Ford Jr. was replaced by Alan Mulally as the company CEO, and today the newswires are reporting that Mercury is on the chopping block. This comes just a couple months after Ford unloaded Landrover and Jaguar to Indian automaker Tata.

According to the Cleveland Leader, industry analyst Aaron Bragman of Global Insight believes “Mercury has one more product cycle left in it, and then will most certainly be retired as a brand.”

The Los Angeles Times reports that Mercury sales have dropped off dramatically. “After regularly selling half a million vehicles a year during the mid-1980s, Mercury sold only 168,000 cars and sport utility vehicles last year. Its U.S. sales are down 23% this year — the biggest drop for any brand except Chrysler and Hummer.”

From a FordMuscle viewpoint, Mercury really hasn’t produced anything of enthusiast interest since the 2003-2004 Mercury Maurader (pictured). Before that you had to go back to the early ’70s to find any significant muscle. Since then, the brand has carried an awkward, semi-luxury, position between Ford and Lincoln. Most of the models offered were just nameplate upgrades of a Ford model (e.g. Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr), the reasonable deduction was that Ford was the bottom-end “econo” product to Mercury and Lincoln. This, in my opinion, made no sense at a time when Ford was struggling to revive its brand image and perceived quality, among other things.

Economy Down, Barn Finds Up?

A number of recent posts in the FordMuscle forums has us wondering if a slow economy has some people loosening their grip on “the old hot rod in the barn”. Here are a couple highlights of recent acquisitions by members of FordMuscle. If you just acquired a “barn find”, be sure to post photos to the appropriate FordMuscle model forum and let everyone know.

Twice Bitten, Still Not Shy

You may remember the story we ran last November when FM member Andy Simon (aka sharpshot71) shared a picture of his brother’s dog Chester wedged in the motor compartment of an F150. Well, it happened again but this time to somebody else’s F150, somebody else’s dog, and on the other side of the country. It may be time Ford issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) regarding this design flaw. Note that both dogs found themselves stuck in the same location under the hood.

This is Chester from the original story we ran back in November 2007. See Watcha Got Under the Hood?.

This is the pit bull from the following story published May 2008.

Original story from the Vacaville Reporter

When a Vacaville man’s truck engine failed to purr as usual Tuesday morning, he popped the hood to administer a routine dose of chemical healing. And got the scare of his life when he saw the glowing eyes and fierce growl of a female pit bull nestled near the engine block.

“Once I had a cat jump out at me,” said Walter Witthoeft, in regard to critters being found reclining under the hood of his Ford F-150. “I wasn’t ready for this this morning. … My daughter works for the SPCA and I didn’t know what to do. So I called her and left her a voice message. She called back and I said (to her), ‘you’re not gonna believe this.’ ”

Witthoeft made the discovery around 7 a.m. as he walked to his truck, which was parked near his home at the Alamo Garden Apartments. He encountered a male pit bull circling the vehicle and continued on, shortly deciding the truck needed a little power steering fluid.

So he popped the hood, and suddenly thought he was meeting his Maker.

“I seen eyes and it was growling at me,” he recalled.

The dog nestled in the engine compartment wore no identification tag and seemed a bit put out regarding the situation, Witthoeft said. He could only surmise that the male pit bull and the one under the hood were together, possibly brother and sister, and were playing.

“When the female got stuck, the male jumped on my hood,” he said.

Paw prints on his hood backed up his theory.

A probe later revealed that the imbedded dog had come up from under the driver’s side and got stuck.

“It got scared and started chewing,” Witthoeft said. “I was really angry.”

The emotion was understandable, as Witthoeft had just gotten his truck back from his mechanic, who had replaced the starter. Then the truck had an unfortunate meeting with the dog, who chewed not only through the fuel line, but also some electrical wiring. The truck is now back at the shop, and Witthoeft is wondering how slim his wallet will become.

Vacaville Police Sgt. Rick Elm described the event as unique, the first he’s experienced after 20 years on the force.

“I thought I’d seen it all. I rolled on this call and, sure thing, I hadn’t,” he said.

Elm said officers tried offering the dog water, but it wouldn’t drink. Further contact was considered risky. Eventually, though, it crawled out from the engine to freedom.

“Once it got up on the hood, we could see it was more docile,” Elm said. A rope leash was placed around the dog’s neck and Humane Animal Services led the dog away.

The dog appeared healthy, Elm said, and remains in the custody of Humane Animal Services.

Are Gas Prices Affecting Your Hobby Spending?

Gas Prices

With oil over $120 a barrel, gasoline prices are now at all time highs, and are projected to go even higher. In fact, the prices for petroleum products such as oil and other automotive lubricants are also rising. Average, non-enthusiast, drivers are cutting back on personal spending to keep their tanks full. Automotive enthusiasts, on the other hand, have always been somewhat undeterred by gasoline prices. We continue to drive and modify our high-horsepower fuel inefficient cars - even if it means eating Top Ramen, or forgoing an expensive dinner date. But we suspect with 87 octane at $4 a gallon, many enthusiasts will rethink their hobby expenditures.

Even the crew at FordMuscle is feeling the pinch. Our programmer Chris Monahan recently made the painful decision to trade in his beloved 2004 Cobra for a more fuel efficient German sedan. Some of us are clearly driving our Ford muscle cars less, and racing is almost out of the question since the trailering and high-octane fuel costs can easily come out to a $300 outing.

FordMuscle wants to know if the fuel prices have affected you and your Ford project cars. Tell us, are you still racing as much as before? Have you cut back on how much you drive your car, or the modifications you intended to perform?

Ford’s Special Speedster

1934 Model 40 Ford

BusinessWeek.com has a very nice feature story on a one-of-a-kind roadster that was built for Edsel Ford back when he was Ford’s president in 1934. Edsel has returned from a trip to Europe and wanted a sport, Italian looking ride. He commissioned Bob Gregorie, a Lincoln designer, to take on the task. He created this beautiful boattailed aluminum body on a modified ‘34 Ford chassis. Originally painted gun-metal gray, the “Speedster” was sold for $1000 after Edsel’s death in 1943 (a hefty sum at the time). It then sold almost immediately for a whopping $2,500 in 1948 and spent some time with up and coming Hollywood stars. Ultimately it reappeared, ten years later, for sale in Georgia for $603.

Fast forward to March 2008 where it sold at auction for $1,760,000! It’s a fascinating story, go read it at BusinessWeek.

Project Redneck Update

It’s been a while since FordMuscle has mentioned anything about Project Redneck so I thought it was high time to update you all on a few things. Here are some highlights to prove that the ‘78 F250 is still an active part of the FordMuscle cause.

Wondering where that F250 FordMuscle decal came from? You can get one at the FordMuscle Store ($4.95 and free shipping).

Achievement 1

The 1978 Ford does duty pulling Project Torino down to the Nevada DMV for a VIN verification, the first step in registering the ‘73 intermediate. The well traveled 351M did just fine pulling the 6600 lb payload, proving that towing is really about the weight of the tow rig and proper gearing… at least on flat surfaces.

Achievement 2

The Performance Distributor’s Duraspark, Mallory Hyfire, Holley Truck Avenger 470, and a cat-free Flowmaster U-Fit Dual Kit, make passing the Nevada emissions test a breeze.

Upgrade 1

A $30 police-issue push bumper from Craigslist makes for a stress-free Sunday afternoon project. Being that the truck was originally a Fire Department Service vehicle, I thought the bumper was an appropriate touch.

Upgrade 2

The utility of this Master Lock adjustable Ball and Receiver is well worth the $60 I paid for it. I see lifted truck and trailer combos going down the road all the time with improper tongue weight… usually it’s a lifted Chevy Silverado and one of those competition ski boats. A few turns of an adjustment nut and spindle and you can reach proper tongue weight. The receiver can be adjusted with or without the trailer attached. Keep in mind this is a Class III hitch rated to 5000 lbs. My UHaul and Gran Torino combo pictured above technically exceeded the capacity of a Class III hitch by 1600 lbs.

Ford sells Jag and Range Rover

Jag

Ford Motor Co. is selling its storied Jaguar and Land Rover businesses to India’s Tata Motors Ltd. in a deal that will net the U.S. automaker $1.7 billion — roughly a third of the price it paid for the two luxury brands.

The deal announced Wednesday will expand the Indian carmaker’s reach around the globe and give Jaguar and Land Rover badly needed capital to update and expand their product lines.

The sale had been in the works for months as cash-strapped Ford sought money to fund its turnaround plan.

Tata will pay $2.3 billion for the British brands, but Ford will pay about $600 million into the Jaguar-Land Rover pension fund when the deal closes, Tata’s statement said.

Ford bought Jaguar for $2.5 billion in 1989 and Land Rover for $2.7 billion in 2000. But the Dearborn-based automaker has been struggling and wants to focus on its main brands.

Selling the companies at such a loss clearly shows buying them was a mistake for Ford, said Erich Merkle, vice president of auto industry forecasting for the consulting company IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids.

Jaguar never has made a profit under Ford, Merkle said.

“People seem to be generally happy about the buyout. Tata has a reputation as a business which is going places and has ambition to be a major market force,” said Lee Betteridge, a 34-year-old Jaguar toolmaker.

“Now, it is time for Ford to concentrate on integrating the Ford brand globally, as we implement our plan to create a strong Ford Motor Company that delivers profitable growth for all.”

Mulally has said Ford would invest the proceeds from the sale in quality and product development.
