help the newbie

Here is your original post:

hello

i joined this forum because the only other decent forum for my falcon is fordsix.com and its not gonna be a six for long.

what im doing is swapping out my 200cid six cylinder to a small block 302.

the 302 has been rebuilt and has a lot of new stuff on it. It came out of a 78 Ford F100.

my questions:

I think i'm probably going to need a smaller oil pan, can you tell me for sure? and if so, what years of engines can i look at using parts? i know ford put 302's in tons of stuff over quite a period of years.

my falcon has the old points ignition system, whereas the 302 has distributor and brain box. What does converting the car to electronic ignition entail?

I pulled off the intake, its an aluminum holley Contender, to clean it, i bought new intake gaskets, do i need an adhesive for this, and what kind if so?

I haven't tore into the mechanics of the falcon yet... so i don't know what kind of transmission i have. It's an automatic and has a seperate bell housing. Can you tell me what i have and if it will work ok with the 302. I plan on using this vehicle as a weekend cruiser, and probably drag racing.

Also what flywheel will i need? the 302 had a manual tranny, so that one won't work.

hmmm... i think thats all for right now...i have some pics here if you wanna see.

yes i know its a four door.

End

You will need a front sump oil pan for the 302, not sure when they stopped making them (should be real easy to find if yours doesn't already have one).

The distributor you have is a "duraspark", it's real easy to hook up. All you need is the dist. and the brain box. If you do a search for duraspark you will find some wiring diagrams.

For you intake, use felpro gaskets and you won't need any adhesive except for at the front and back. I'd reccomend getting a book like "building small block fords by Monroe" to get a step by step, and to get the torque amount and tightening step pattern. I'd use the Ultra Black RTV on the ends and don't use the cork gaskets. If you search for "intake gasket" here you will find a lot more on this.

You'll want to get a "small bell" C4 (transmission) out of a V8 car 1970+, the one you have has a 5 bolt bell housing. You need a six bolt housing. The V8 ones also have different torque convertors and are tougher. The flex plate you get will need to be for your year engine and bell housing. If you get a small bell C4, it will be a 157tooth. Not sure if that engine needs a 28 oz or 50 oz balance... someone here will know.

Welcome!
