The New Engine Is Finally Starting To Come Together
I was towing the car on a dolley and got rear-ended by a chevelle buddy's 3/4 ton truck he was pulling his car with. It didn't hit SUPER hard. We were still able to go to the track, and I was still able to run a 10.65 with it... but had to listen to the track officials gripe about it spilling fuel out it's bent up gas cap on launch!
I came back from this last race of the year and decided to do some 'nitrous testing' on the street. I only had limited amounts of race fuel (some not that fresh) which I mixed a little av-gas with. This was not a smart Idea, as the pistons are not even ideal for nitrous... Short story, I broke the ring land off a piston. I removed that head and oil pan (in the car), machined another piston to fit, and put back together only to have it start knocking 30 seconds after firing it up. It turns out a piston on the other bank was on the verge of having a ring land break as well.
The lands were VERY thin near the vale notches. This was due to milling 0.060" off the piston tops and having their valve notches opened up.
The new pistons aren't like that.
It was a VERY 'suck-a-riffic' weekend. The frame has now been pulled out on a machine, but the bodywork still needs done... and the engine is well on it's way.
The car has been off the road almost two years, as three kids, tight finances, lack of motivation, etc. have taken their toll on 'reconstruction' time.
Hopefully it will roar to life in a month or so. I just need to degree the cam, do some finish up port work on one head, have a valve job done and complete the build.
