Make absolute sure that the ground wire from the battery negative terminal to the engine is a good connection. Undue the bolt, scape the block clean so that you are not just counting on the threads to be your ground. Also make sure that there is a ground wire from the battery negative to the chassis. I have had the same type of problems in the past, and that was exactly what the problems were.
