Why Destroke an Engine?

I know why people stroke engines, and even why they choose not to. But why in the world does someone want to destroke an engine? I see this mentioned in articles about race cars quite a bit. Is it just to comply with cubic inches rules, or is there a mechanical benefit to it? [img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif[/img]
