5 Bolt 289 to 351w swap question...

I would imagine that the only reason that Ford came up with the larger case would be for increased mounting strength, although they used the same narrow case behind the 390 big block. I don't know if that would be a problem or not with your 351w.

One thing to look at with your present toploader is the output shaft. Does it have 25 splines or 28 splines? I certainly wouldn't consider using the early 25 spline model due to strenth considerations (although it would fit if you use the proper yoke.)
