Re: Please help! SMOKE out the exhaust!
Ok so here's the deal I got a smog check today and failed again.... Bah! I have changed the 02 sensor The catback is a magnaflo high flo cat 2 chamber flowmaster muffler and of course downey offroad long tube headers. Don't trip 50 state legal long tube headers and I have passed with those headers on the past couple of years.
Ok so this is how it went down. I had a smog test only performed a month or so ago. It was going to fail so I changed a few things out O2 sensor cat and muffler. I took it back today he said it would fail again but I needed a read out or we are shooting into the dark.
So we perform the test the results are as follows: There were 2 tests performed.
TEST 1 TIME 1:01 PM
The HC(ppm) failed
M1 15MPH: Max 118 GP 305 MEAS 121
M2 25MPH: Max 98 GP 255 MEAS 45
The CO(%) passed
M1 15MPH: Max 0.68 GP 1.98 MEAS 0.10
M2 25MPH: Max 0.87 GP 2.17 MEAS 0.02
The NO(ppm) failed
M1 15MPH: Max 999 GP 1776 MEAS 1847
M2 25MPH: Max 859 GP 1576 MEAS 1521
RESULT GP FAIL
TEST 2 TIME 4:40
HC(ppm) Fail
M1: 15 MPH MEAS 124
M2: 25 MPH MEAS 53
CO(%) Pass
M1: 15 MPH MEAS 0.12
M2: 25 MPH MEAS 0.01
NO(ppm) Fail
M1: 15 MPH MEAS 1716
M2: 25 MPH MEAS 1536
RESULT FAIL FAIL
Sorry the post is so long... So after the test was done he said it was the CAT, the EGR, the O2 sensor, spark plugs or the timing.
I then told him I changed the cat the 02 sensor the night b4 and the spark plugs are also brand new and gapped @ 31. He checked the EGR and said it was fine. The car passed the "Emission Control Systems Visual Inspection/ Functional Check Results" The only thing that didn't say pass is the "other related emis. components" Modified. "Visual inspection" Tampered. "Functional check" pass "Emissions Test" Fail.
Anyways my cat has a 2" piece of piping and the muffler is attached right after that and the exhaust tip is turned down before the rear axel. Apparently he said that it is too "HOT" so I was wondering if I changed out my Highflo Cat to stock and my Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler to stock and extended the piping to the normal length with dual outlets this time would that give me a shot or am I screwed because it says tampered and modified.
My thoughts are that if you are near an open flame lets say within 3 feet it is pretty darn hot... Now if you back up another 2 feet you aren't quite as hot. The is about 2 feet of piping that was taken out. If I have it put back could that take down the temp. and get me within range of passing?
He tried to tell me to change all this stuff. Then he couldn't tell me what was wrong when I told him that I had already changed it. So then he said it was my exhaust manifolds. He didn't even notice the long tube headers for 3 freaking hours.
