Picking a new alternator for 289

This is a very basic question, sorry, working on my first car restoration. I'm starting with the entire engine.

I've read about the various alternator replacements for my stock 289 (no a/c). It seems that today's alternators pump out more voltage than the original ones and that may cause a problem for the voltage reg. Any advice? Do I need to make sure the voltage regulator can work properly with the alternator? One parts site I visited said there was an issue with using a new alternator with the original regulator.

thanks
