Re: Timing my 302
To make life easier on my old eyes when I build an engine I always paint the dampener black. Then I find Top Dead Center (TDC) on the number one cylinder (using the cam and crank marks and double checking with a piston stop) then I mark the crank with a file where the pointer lines up with TDC. Then I mark the first 20 degrees in 2 degree steps. Then I mark 30 degrees and 34 degrees and 36 degrees. After putting the file marks i use white out or white paint to make the file marks more visible. I can touch up any blurbs with black after the white dries.
That way I can time the engine at 3000 RPM and be sure it is right on the mark for best HP without guessing. I also mark the dampener and the inner hub with a white line to show me if the dampener slips on the hub.
