reverse manual VB problem

I've been running a C4 in my car for a while, and up to now I've been running a factory valvebody with with a transgo manual/automatic shift kit. I have good parts in the tranny, a PA servo, deep pan, redneck converter, etc. I have not had any trouble with it. I wanted to upgrade to a reverse manual to get the ultimate in firm shifts and control. I bought a pa26304 (rev manual VB for 70-up) through summit racing and installed it today. Fluid looked like the day I put it in, very very minimal fines in the bottom of the pan, I was suprised based on how tough I've been on the tranny. I dropped out the old VB and installed the new, kind of a pain getting the selector and kickdown arm lined up but I eventually did. Torqued all the bolts as per the instructions, followed the included instructions to the letter. I put on the pan and fluid in the tranny. ran through the gears on jackstands and then on the ground per instructions, adding fluid to the proper level. I anxiously head out for a test spin. motor up to temp, tranny up to about 140 degrees I turn out onto the street. Up to about 2500 in first, feels fine, shift to second....feel nothing....rpms stay the same... I give it a little gas... still no felt shift....pull back to third....instant firm shift. I try again with the same results. WTF! Back into the driveway, check fluid, it's a little low so I bring the level up to the "hot" mark (tranny now up to about 160 degrees, don't remember it ever getting any higher). Test drive again, same results, no felt 1-2 shift, definite 2-3 shift. When I shift to 2nd it does not feel like neutral, car continues to motivate. just feels like I'm shifting 1-1-3. I tried calling performance automatic, but of course they are not open for questions when most guys have the time to be working on they're cars and run into these problems. Any suggestions? VB does NOT have a t-brake.
