I think the later Rangers had better intake manifolds and throttle bodies (maybe off of a 2.5L), you might check into that.
I know that the stock computer also de-tunes that engine (to help engine last longer). I don't have a clue what's out there in this department, but it might be worth checking into.
I sold my 2.3/5spd for $200 and dropped in a 302/C4. That didn't help save gas though.

Here is a video of my old Ranger before I sold it :*( to fund my Capri. I got about 175HP out of it N/A, and that was with standalone engine management (Megasquirt), Esslinger cams, big vlaves, ported head, 2.5 internals, custom CAI, custom exhaust, etc. The video is with old tires and worn out shifter bushings. I'm giving it about 3/4 throttle the whole time (no traction).
