Works like a charm.
That's cheating! Great tip. Thanks. Might come in handy some day.

Re: Metal bits in oil filter?

What year is it? Also, does the engine run smooth and is it quiet around the timing gear area? I am also thinking timing gear coming apart unless it is burning/using a lot of oil, then I also would suspect valve seals.

Yes, this works fine. Have done it many times. I also agree it is the valve seals that have turned hard, craked and came out.

However...... You will have more of that stuff in your oil pan. You must flush it all out. Also the oil return holes going down to the pan should be checked for debree's.

I can not figure how that stuff got past your oil screen and then the pump without breaking the shearing pin, unless it is very small stuff.

One more note, if the engine has lots of miles, the oil seals are busted like you say, your plugs have oil on them, I am 100% promise you your intake valves are 50% blocked with hardened oil on them.

Taking the heads off it probably the best route to go if you want any kind of power, and gas milage with this motor.

Re: Metal bits in oil filter?

i know its an old thread, but one thing i have heard about the rope in the cylinder trick, is to make sure you use cotton rope, not nylon. any cotten threads left will just burn up, but nylon will stick to stuff

that is exactly what i found when pulling my valve cover...... now it makes sense, i know what those chunks are.

could any more be stuck throughout the bottom end, contributing to the extremely low oil pressure? (i didn't entirely rebuild the motor as i should've)

Hey, it takes me a while to get around to doing some things. I meant to answer it 5 years ago, but I got busy.
