Removing the chrome side panals.

I removed the lower chrome side panals on my 68 Mustang. The reason is that they liked to hold mud and I felted it was not worth it. So now that I have the chrome side panals off. How do I get the white tabs that held them in place off, without being too destructive? The white tabs are held in place with rivets to the body. Is there a way to get rid of the rivets without having to go back and then weld in the holes. Then on top of that more bodywork. Any help is appriciated.

Those lil white tabs should have a hole that they slide to. If not, and you do not plan to put the moulding on again, start with a 3/16 drill bit and drill out the centre. Then, with a steady handgo to a 5/16 or 3/8 and just drill enough that the head of the rivet disappears. Save the tabs, you may want them in the future or find someone who needs them badly.
At this point, you should have a nib about 1/8" and using a Dremel or equivalent, with a cone bit slowly follow the 3/16 hole til you parallel with the body panel. How are you with body work / touch-up work? Once you have gotten to this point, the decision is your to either go just a lil more and then us a filler for the hole to make it flush, or find yourself someone who can spend 2 hours to finish it off for you. You can do it, just don't rush.

The only way it's going to look right is to drill the rivets out, weld up the holes and do the body work. If you leave the rivets in it's going to look like ass.

Thanks for the responses, I would have replied sooner but have been out of town. I think I will wait until I repaint my car, and then do it right.
