ILLEGAL OR LEGAL EXHAUST???

Hi, My exhaust consists of Hedman headers, 40 series Flowmaster mufflers, and no tail pipes. I have 2 inch pipes that turn down right before the rearend. My question is is that setup illegal to run without tailpipes, There is no emmisions testing where I live, But probably soon to be. The exhaust is nice and loud, just the way I like it. Will the local police give me a vehicle inspection because they will think it is to loud???

Probably. If the cops want to hassel you, they can find bunch of little things to do it with. One of my very few cop friends (only one) was telling me that the average driver commits 4-10 citeable infractions within every mile, without knowing it. So the question is, "How much attention do you want?". Personally, I have always been partial to full exhausts...headers to tailpipe. If you think about it, all that carbon monoxide collects under the car when the exhaust dumps before the axle. CO2 is a colorless, oderless gas, it makes you sleepy, impairs your judgement and can kill. Sounds kinda like drunk driving, doesn't it?

Yes that system is illegal,at least in Ontario. The exhaust must be routed so it does not exit underneath the car.Turn outs in front of the back wheel are also illegal unless the vehicle came that way from the factory.

If you're moving the monoxide won't collect under the car, and just fyi, carbon monoxide = CO, not CO2. I'd have to agree though, you'll attract more attention to yourself if your exhaust is louder, and more attention = more noticing of the things you do wrong.

I have headers, 40 seriesFlows, and turndowns before the axle on my Fairlane. It's pretty loud, it hasn't drawn any attetion here in Az. When I go to take my emissions test, I hook up a set of tailpipes that run under the axle to the rear, and under the bumper. I like the tailpipes better. Loud gets old quick.

I've found that the police are pretty cool about automotive modifications here. They haven't pulled me over since last fall.

Thanks Spewn, I had a pre senior moment. But the facts still stand. I have been in cars with muffler dumps, too loud for me and here during the commute clog, it...the exhaust... can get bad while sitting in traffic, having dumps makes it worse. 'Course, like the bumper sticker say, "If its too loud, you are too old"! Eh, what did you say Sonny, Can't hear you for the noise.

ILLEGAL OR LEGAL EXHAUST???

I had a severly illegal exhaust on my F-350 for 2 months after I did the initial 4 speed swap. That is, my old pipes didnt fit 'cuz of the clutch linkage, and I was too broke for new ones, so open manifolds was the budget-wise plan. Only got pulled over once, and was not ticketed, but it was so loud I couldnt stand it. Saved every buck I could till I was able to get the new system installed. Was only cool for the first 20 min....

Seeing your a good ol boy from BC...yes, your exhaust is illegal. The motor vehicle code for BC states:
"Exhaust systems must evacuate beyond the rear of the passenger compartment. exception: factory sidepipes / diesel exhaust stacks"
So, the pipes have to be behind the back seat /rear end
