pulleys for 289, v-belt or serpentine?
I need to buy pulleys for my 289, and I'd like to get an underdrive set because it'll be hitting 7K rpm and it would just make me feel better if the water pump and alternator didn't have to do the same. I only need the crank (four bolt), water pump, and alternator pulleys. I want to get pulleys for a small serpentine belt, like the 2.0L in my '85 ranger has, with no tentioner, but are there any pulley sets available that have the grooves on the water pump pulley (for normal direction rotation)? If not, what set of v-belt pulleys can you guys recommend? I'm trying to save money everywhere possible, so the cheaper the better. Thanks

The cheapest underdrive v belt pullies ive seen are from Ford Motorsports, $136.00 for a crank/alt/pump set. I think I saw those in PAW
Ive often wondered about the serpentine setup myself, just running it the same way as the v belts, but just using a serpentine with no tensioner. I dont know if it would work, but it would be nice to use cheap 5.0 underdrives.

yes they do make a serpentine belt for regular rotation . i just done this swap myself . i went to the junkyard and dug through their pully ben ,until i felt like i had what i needed. the waterpump pulley was an 85 pulley that was ribbed and the crank pulley was off an 87 and it was the smaller one.these were all single pulleys. i also used a 40" belt and everything is working just fine . happy hunting

Hmm, never thought about going to the pulley-filled bus at the local junkyard, I might just give that a try. Just for reference, does anyone know the diameter of the stock pulleys, so that i can either try to find a smaller crank pulley or larger water pump and alternator pulleys? Thanks again.

I just went through this with a friend for his 5.oh '67 Fairlane. He ended up with a standard rotation long neck water pump, stock '87 - '93 mustang 5.0 crank and alt pulleys and a ribed water pump pulley made by March. Go to marchperf.com They probably have what you need. The serpantine looks COOL!

64 TBOLT: please post pics or email them to me, it's motrhed@cableone.net. Thanks
Thanks for the help guys, I'll probably just see what I can find at the junkyard. How can I tell a Ford water pump pulley from a Chevy, Honda, whatever? Won't they all be different depths? I guess I can just look for the Ford logo stamped on the pulley, and hopefully the bolt pattern and depth will turn out to be correct.
