Quest for Super-Cam

I am building a 302 for my '66 Stang right now. It is a late model ('87) block. I have TFS Twisted Wedge heads, KB hypereutectics w/ 9.5:1, long tube headers, 4spd toploader, 9" w/ 3.89:1, and the bottom end is ready to turn 7000rpm. the only thing I have left is the cam. I want something that will get me around town, but also be able to tear up any camaros that come my way. What would be a good choice? Its gonna be a roller, havent decided on solid or hyd yet, but I want as wide a power band as possible w/ peak at 6500rpm.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Patrick

P.S. I also havent decided on carb size. I was thinking about 700cfm. Will this be too big? Also I think a Performer RPM would be a good choice. DO YOU???

Quest for Super-Cam

I'd check into Comp Cams x-treme energy series. Give them a call to get better specifics on the grind. Those guys do this for a living and I've never heard them give anyone bad advice, although they're usually a little on the conservative side. Your heads are gonna like a split profile with more duration on the exhaust side. I'd suggest at least a 700, maybe even 750 for the carb. I'd stay with a single plane intake given your gearing and redline.

I'm very happy with my Comp XE262H in my present setup. Check the Dyno Page forum here on FM for my specs and results.

Good luck!

If you want a cam that produces a very wide power band, you need to chose one that has fast opening and closing rates and has a wide lobe seperation angle. Also, 7000 RPM is far higher than you can turn with a hydraulic roller cam. It becomes hard to control valve float above about 62-6400 RPM with hyd rollers because the lifter itself is quite heavy. If you want your peak power at 6500 and want to turn 7000 you'll need a solid roller setup. Ultradyne makes a nice cam, their 278/290 solid roller grind (244-255 .593-.593 112 l/s) that would easily run from just over 3000 to 7000 RPM and should be good for close to 425 HP with 9.5 compression and a good exhaust system. If that's too much for you, there's a Crower roller grind that you might like, their 280R grind. (232-242 .528-.530 112 l/s) This cam will make about 20HP less than the Ultradyne but would be a little better under 3500 RPM. Just remember though when choosing cams that a narrower lobe seperation angle will create a narrower powerband and a little more peak torque while a cam with a wider lobe seperation works better on vehicles that can't run open headers, will be more streetable and economical and will have a wider power band although it will sacrifice a little torque and HP near the peak points. I hope that helps.

this looks like a good cam for my application. maybe the next one up with a 110 lobe .
my combo is a 355 stroker w/ victor jr. heads super victor manifold 850 holley 10.5 to 1 long tube headers toploader 4 speed 9 inch 4.11's because i am still in search for a good cam for my combo.

That Ultradyne cam looks real tempting. I'm gonna take a closer look at it.

Thanks for all the help guys I knew I could count on you!

Thanks,
Patrick
