cam choices? a little help!

I'm planning on a cam swap for more streetable torque. Going to a hyd roller. Changing gears to 3.80 or 4.10.
I have a vacuum can now and would like a little lope still.

I agree with Chilly. What stall is your convertor?

2700 STALL, The reason for the cam change also is compression is 9.5, probably to low for my cam so vacuum is low. I have low carb vac signal and have to run rich to make up for it at idle. Idle at 700 in gear.

Anybody running a similar combo for street with these roller cams? I know the approx. performance by Dyno 2000. I'd like to here about idle quality with a auto trans!

That's kind of a big cam for a street 289 and 2700 stall. I bet your idle sounds bad azz. You would get better launch with higher stall, but you will make your car a little "less streetable" and create more heat, use more gas, etc.

You might consider about a 220 - 225 cam. I have more experience with flat cams, but if you go with a roller at the same numbers you should have about the same idle and low end torque as a flat but more top end.

You cam choice depends on what you want to do. Reducing your cam will give you a lower RPM for your peak TQ, therefore less max HP. If you are racing that could be bad. It's a compromise to obtain the best of both worlds without increasing CID.

If I were you I'd stick with the cam you have. Yeah, your low end torque is sucking, but let's face it, with an Edelbrock RPM intake you're not going to improve it much even if you change the cam. Your engine's basically set up to play in the 2800-6500 rpm range. Changing the cam might fix it a bit, but I think you've got a decent cam match for your engine right now. Bumping up your gears will get you off the line faster, which is probably what you're more interested in, and it kind of depends what you want to do with the vehicle. You're kind of floating on the edge of streetability with an auto tranny and that setup. Either put in more gear, or get a custom-built stall converter, talk to a converter manufacturer and get one built for your combo, and call it done :p
