Right adjustment of T5 Power Tower shifter stop bolts

The instructions say that you should put and hold the trans tightly in gear, tighten the stop bolts until they touch the shifter arm and then back the bolt off about one turn. By doing this there will be a gap between the bolt and the shifter arm. Can this be the right way?By doing this the bolt does not stop the shifter arm movement when shifting normally. Should it only stop the shifter at extremely violent shifts?
Since english is not my native language I have uderstood that by backing the bolt off means I should turn it back one turn, creating a gap...I hope that in this case it does not mean the opposite...this would be one obvious reason for my T 5 failure...

I set them so that when the shifter is in gear, there is a the slightest gap between the shifter and the stop - say about .020". Then, when you shift, there is an audible "click" as the shifter lightly taps the stop. I believe your interpretation of the english instructions is correct from your post. Based on the instructions, I set them with too little clearance - so I do not know if my method would be better for you. How did your transmission fail? My understanding is the stops prevent failure solely due to excessive force applied during rapid shifts. Did you experience that type of failure?

Thanks for your reply, I am glad I set the bolts correctly...cant be that was the reason. The reason must be that a 393 just is too much for the trans. If you are interested in the topic go back couple of weeks in this forum and see the post " T5 strength- final judgement".
Ville.

Ville, you read the directions correctly. And yes, I'm pretty sure the bolts are positioned to only stop a pretty violent whack of the stick.

You're definitely a candidate for a Tremec, especially given the way you drive. The 393 already puts the T-5Z at its limits. Add your 150 mph blasts through the open countryside...

BTW, the additional dedication required to build a street beast in Finland is much admired. I don't suppose you get a lot of speed shops in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

HankyJ, I agree with you that a stronger trans is needed. T 5 really is not a high performance unit.It is ok for less than 350 hp and a "long" rearend ratio( 2.73-3.27)so that you dont need the 5th for high performance driving: overdrive ratio is .063, making a 4.11 act like 2.59.That means when you shift from 4th to 5th at 6000 rpm the revs drop to less than 3800- not too good for acceleration at 120 + mph...
I browsed through the TTC pages and discovered that the strongest Tremec TKO II is rated 475 ft.lbs and can be had with 0.82 overdrive ratio. With 3.50 rear gears the trans has well spaced, ideal ratios on all gears.
As for speed shops, we have numerous in here and parts availability is not such a big issue. All of those shops can deliver almost everything you have over there in US but of course price & delivery times are higher/longer.Personally, I have already for more than 15 years, ordered all my parts directly from US, saving abt 20-30 % compared to speed shop prices.Still, after freight/ customs/etc. we pay abt 30 % more than US citizens. Anyway, the hobby is well and alive here in the north. It really is quite big here, for example I believe we have about 1500 Mustangs in the country ( population 5 million)and almost all of those are restored/modified/ used as second /hobby car.
Also good is that we have very quiet traffic compared to most countries, long good deserted roads...but you never know where the police is lurking. If you get caught for speeding the fines are unbeliavable. One of the chief executives from Nokia was radared for 13 mph overspeed and the fine was something like 100.000 USD!!!!!!!!! If heŽd only done 12 mph over the fine would been only 100 USD. The secret is it depends on your income, if you go over a certain speed limit( just that 13 mph).Less than 13 mph over and is a set fine for 50-100 USD.I wonder what I would get if I get caught going some 170 mph at 60 mph limit....
