Probably not enough that you can tell, if any difference.

The rule of thumb is to use the highest octance gasoline that prevents pre-ignition or detonation. Anything above this octane rating is a waste of money, or so they say.

I am no pro, but isnt that why you advance the timing? When you advance the timing isnt that when you start noticing the differance? So essentially it is not the gas itself that makes any difference but rather the timing change. The higher octane just tolerates the timing???

Hows my aim?

There's a certain point where advance & octane are optimum, after that it's all pointless. You run advanced timing to compensate for flame travel time & play in the timing systems. Once you get to the point of the advance sparking the fuel at it's optimum point, any more advance is useless. You only want to run as much octane as necessary, any higher won't help.

That's a good question to ponder. I had a terrible engine vibration due to excesive timing ang got a nice impropmtu lesson from Greg Cook about compression vs timing. Typically for an engine of about 10.5:1 you don't want to advance further than 40* max. That would be regardless of octane rating.

What I wonder is this - if higher octane fuel will take more compression to detonate (therefore allow more advance), why could I not run 110 and set my max timing to 50*? Greg's car produces 750+ HP and maxes at 32*, so he knows what he's talking about, but I still have that nagging question about the reasoning why and what would his motor do with 110 octane and 42*??!!??
