need answer fast please...... switching from manual to auto trans question

If a car has a manual tranny with a shift on the tree setup, how hard is it to convert it to an auto trans setup? I've found a possible replacement for "PS" if my granada rots bodywise and I'm wondering how hard it would be to do this if I buy this car, it's a 76 Monarch. Thanks.

I converted a car, back in the day, the other way from an auto to stick. It's not that hard, if you have the factory parts available. But going the way, stick to an auto should actually be easier. It just depends on how authentic you want it to look. If you want to keep it shifting on the tree, I would guess you would need to change out the steering colume, pull the brake and clutch pedal (and any linkage), possibly change the transmission mounts and drive shaft. If you went with a floor shifter, you could save some time and trouble. Again, on the pedals, hopefully there is no difference on underdash supports, you just may need to swap the bigger brake pedal, auto, for the two smaller brake/clutch. stick, assembly. It's probably more of a specific model type of thing, I was just giving out ideas. Hope thats what you were looking for, a little brainstorming?

I'm not concerned about looks, I'm just not sure sure how hard or easy it would be to gut the shifting mechanism from the Monarch if I bought it. I have a B&M shifter which is still sitting in the closet (haven't had time to put it in my granada yet) and if I do get the Monarch it will be kept exactly the way it is now until my granada is rotting bad bodywise. I will finish my project on it and only when the car is rusted really bad would I take everything from it and swap it into the Monarch, that way everything I've invested into this project will transfer over to a new and better looking "project sleeper"

Gut the shifter? If you are not real concerned about the look, right now, then just take the shift lever off and move evrything to the floor shifter. The only thing that might present a problem is the newer cars have that neutral/park start switch and some have a brake or clutch depress interlock, I don't know if either of yours do? That was the only reason for suggesting that you get a steering column. It may just be me, but every time I built a "snooker" I would sooner or later clean it up a little. Nothing flashy, just enough to keep me from having to apologize when I drove it work or parked in a driveway.

I'm just about to do a swap in the other direction on my Granada - C-4 to T-5. The pedal swap will be very easy...the brake pedal can be removed and replaced without taking the pedal support out of the car. The clutch pedal bolts on to the side of the support; three nuts removed, and the pedal comes off! (backing plate inside the support holds the bolts.)

Does that car have an ignition interlock switch on the clutch? The pedal set I got doesn't have one. I'm not sure Granadas of that vintage even had one. If you have the interlock switch, I'd like to buy it from you if you're not planning on keeping the standard tranny. (or I can trade it to you for a spare neutral safety/backup light switch I have that will fit your C-4)

Eldoon, I haven't bought the car yet, I'm still trying to figure out the details relating to customs if I did buy the car, but I doubt I will. I'm partial to 78 model granadas and I really don't know if it has the neutral switch you're looking for.

If I did buy the car it may be a while before I would transfer stuff from old "PS" to new "PS" (you'll be waiting a long time for this switch if it did have one). I also wouldn't need the switch you have for the C4 trans, my quicksilver shifter has the switches on it that would be wired into my car. If it did work out I would not charge you for the switch you want, we are here to help one another whenever possible (no need to even mention buying it)

It's quite a ways from where you reside but perhaps you or someone might be interested in it, although the auction is closed I believe the owner is looking to sell, someone might get a deal on it before he relists it, send him an email.
