28 or 31 spline, How to ID.

I'm glad the forum is back up, I was having withdrawals.
I read the tech article on the 9" rears and I have a question. Do all 28 spline axles use the small wheel bearing? Do all 31 spline use the big bearing? The article sort of leads me to that conclusion but I want to know for sure. I am just trying to find a way to ID what I have without pulling the axle.
Thanks,
Kywookie

This may or may not be true in all cases but a good starting point....

1967-1973 Mustang axles can be identified by wheel flange:

Oval hole = 28 splines.
Two large holes and counter-sunk center = 31 splines.

I am trying to figure out if my 79 T-Bird has 28 or 31 splines. On the end of the axles there are 2 holes with a countersunk dimple in the middle which Larry says means 31 spline on the early Mustangs. Does anyone know if what Larry says holds true for the later model 9 inchers?
