How much can be taken off a crankshaft? Mine has already been turned .010...

Since my engine was out of the car, I decided to check the bottom end for any wear. I found the rod journels of the crankshaft and the bearings to be visibly grooved. If you run your fingernail over the grooves you can feel them. I had the machine work done back in 1989 and the engine has under 2000 street miles on it since. It was turned .010 at the time. Upon inspection of the cast Cloyes timing gear, I found actual chips of metal missing. I guess these chips found their way into the oil. I see no other visible signs of wear. I would assume the crank will need another .010 to clean it up. Is .020 too much? What about strength issues?
I planned on having the car back on the road next weekend. What a bummer!

Cranks can be turned up to .030 . Unless this is a high horsepower engine .020 under should be fine.

The crank in my racecar that has gone 9.97 in the 1/4 is .020/.020. No problems.
