Fluidampr and pulley alignment on 302

I have a '87 302 street motor on my engine stand with a 4 bolt fluidampr attached and a early model water pump (passenger side water inlet). I have an 8" crankshaft pulley and about a 5-6" water pump pulley (both are later model v-belt pulleys) and they hit each other and don't line up correctly at all.

I also have an early model 3 bolt crankshaft pulley that was converted to a 4 bolt pulley and that positions the grooves too far out when used with an early model water pump pulley.

What should I do? I was thinking of ordering the #1532 crankshaft pulley from March but I'm not exactly sure it'll fit.

Please help!!

Thanks in advance.

Erik

p.s. the fluidampr sticks out about 1/2" - 1" more than a early model '66 289 dampener.

My pully came from March and it works like a charm. It did cost me around $100 though. It is under driven slightly so it will reduce your clearance problems also.

I have a CAT brand fluid damper and Miloden 289 water pump, and I bought the ford racing single-groove v-belt billet aluminum pulleys and a .350" crank pulley spacer. I had to do a little bit of work on the lathe to the crank spacer (I have no idea why they made it with a lip on both sides), but after doing that the pulleys lined up perfect.

I'm running the exact same water pump and dampner. Did you have any problems installing the CAT dampner?

The machine shop installed the damper, and he said it was a really tight fit, so it must've been a little bit of a pain to put on...

I wondered. I had the same problem. Had to hone it with a brake hone to get it on.

I had a machine shop turn me up a new pulley to the correct specs from a biece of billet aluminum. It's a little underdriven (due to the reduced radius. Took them about an hour's labour and $40 for the aluminum, so $100 all up. Not cheap but fits PERFECTLY and looks very very shmick.

I just read your e-mail and noticed that you were using the later w/p pulley. I'm using the 289 style w/p pulley. If you buy from March tell him exactly which pulley you are using (year). The 1532 is special order and can't be returned. It is easier to order a matching set if you have the cash.

Let us know what' up. James

I've got one of those CAT brand ballancers too. I bought it from a buddy for $90. He got it for a 95gt because his cam apart. Found out he got the wrong balance and swaped me for one that would work on his car.

I went to put it on my 289 and it was a real tight fit too. I don't have it on yet because of the pully allignment problem. Need a spacer and didn't know what thickness to get.

Jimmy: The March 1532. Is that the bottom crank pulley, or a whole set? I'm using the early 289(pass) water pump and pulley. Would that setup work for me?

Problems resolved. I've got a late model 302 w/ early model water pump (passenger side inlet). Called March and Randy recommended to use crankshaft pulley part #1614. I got it last night and it lined up correctly with the early model water pump pulley. Now hopefully the alternator and brackets all line up since everything is based on the early model parts.

Thanks for the help!!

Erik
