Prepping for paint: need help.

I'm getting ready to paint my '79 Indy Pace Car. I have stripped all the decals off ueing an "eraser" and a DA sander. I still have a lot of adhesive left behind where the stripes were. How do I get the adhesive rom the stripes off? I tried using 3M adhesive remover but it didn't even touch it. I was told by someone today that I can get some 2000 grit sandpaper, use my DA sander adn wet sand it all off. Will this work?

Any other suggestions?

Mineral spirits or laquer thinner usually work pretty well.

Won't lacquer thinner or mineral spirits take off the paint to bare metal?

Lacquer thinner will not take off cured paint. Decals and glue come off well with Acetone. The glue is a product on top of the paint, so remove it with a solvent not with a sander. You might do a search for autobody.com they have a great board there and can help.

Lacquer thinner will remove lacquer very slowly if cured, and it will remove multi stage enamels and urethanes even slower. When you sand the glue it turns to liquid from the heat and will only clog your sanding disks and reapply itself to the car.

Once the majority of the glue is removed, you still need to clean off all the residue and solvent is the only way. It's extremely important to make sure that the entire body is absolutely cleaned to perfection before you apply your new coats of paint, especially at today's paint prices.
