Stock 351 block *1978*

I have been told you have to have an aftermarket block to do 5's in the 1/8th but yet there is 4-5 guys doing it at my local track.

My question, WILL a stock 351 W block with a girdle hold a 275 plate kit with a 408 stroker, maybe even 418.

I'd personally use a Cleve block, rather than a windsor, as they were built stronger.

351W's are stronger. 351C's suffer from thin cylinder walls and an inferior (comared to the 351W) oiling system. The 69-74 351W blocks are the strongest, but be aware that the 69' blocks have a shorter deck height. They are around 0.020" shorter @ 9.48".

However, I have a buddy who pushed a 79' block in a 3000lb fox body to a 5.92 @ 121 in the 1/8 on two stages of nitrous. This was with a cut down, stroked 400 crank and Chrysler rods in a 426.

You'd blow the cylinder walls out of a 351C trying that if the block wasn't filled.

Good Luck!

Use good rods and oiling system. ARP rod bolts, main studs with a girdle and you'll be running with the big dogs. Use a good oil pump driveshaft.

Well, what rpm was he turning? can you release the type of heads he was running? any port work? any of that would help alot in consideration.

If I do it, it will be a 426 kit with a girdle and good stuff.

426W, offset ground 400 crank, Chrysler rods, 252/262 solid roller, dished pistons ~11:1 cr, BIG ported TFS Hi-Port heads and Vic Jr. intake, 2-stage nitrous, C4 trans w/brake, 8.8 rear w/3.73 gear, 1-7/8" headers, 3000lbs w/driver, shifted no higher than 6500rpm. Usually closer to 6k.

The engine ran flawlessly for two years like this before the shortblock was sold to a guy who bracket raced it for a while.

He was always VERY conservative with the timing. This, along with the lower compression are (in my opinion) what allowed the engine to live so long. This has been 6-7 years ago.

Good Luck!
