home porting my heads!!!!

i just bought my heads(351W) to put on my 302 and looked at the exhaust ports and noticed that they looked kinda small... so i put the gasket up to them and sure enough they could use a trim. i'll be doing this tomorrow, but one thing that i want to know is if 34000 rpm is too much with the die grinder for the job...??

seems like a good rpm.
Is that what the die grinder is rated for?
IE check the instructions for amount of PSI required for the maximum RPM.
Also with a die grinder make sure you choose your bits wisely! A more aggressive bit and you will chew up head material.
When you match the gaskets measure twice and cut once! Also use a color die to show you what your cutting.

Run that thing at half speed and get a carbide bit, plan on spending a full messy
day. If you have the smog bumps, grind them away.

Billgear nice pics.I have a set of J-code 302 heads that had the smog pump tubes and I wondered how they would clean up,or if you could really port them but it looks like you did a good job.

You'll kill carbide burrs and sanding rolls in no time spinning them 35k rpm.

If the grinder is electric, get a 300W (at least) dimmer switch at the hardware store (or Walmart) and use it to slow the speed down to around 10-12k. If you are using stones, the faster the better... but it will still feel like slow motion compared to a carbide burr.

You can order these products from Summit... just call them with the part numbers.

Good Luck!

Make sure you don't go bigger on the ports than your header tube dimensions. I recently found out that one particular head, a GT40P in fact, will lose a little flow if the top of the header pipe is too close to the top of the port. Seems it likes about 1/8" step from the port opening to the top of the header pipe. But thats just one head design. Yours may not apply.
