Car keeps cutting off!!!!!

I have a 66 Mustang with 289 and we just had everything fixed after it hydrolocked but anyway it now will cut off if you give it gas from a stop. If you kinda pump it until it gets going it does fine. I cant have it stalling like that...i dont want to get in a intersection and it cut off on me out there. The guy said the pump was about to go out but it only has 700 miles on it. The fuel in the filter doesnt stay in there after the car sits for a bit either. What do you think it is?

What carb are you running? If its a Holley or an Autolite it sounds like the classic signs of a blown out powervalve.

Dont you have a friend to can borrow a carb from for an hour or so to check it out with. If not the carb weak ignition. Coil going bad. Timing retarded too far.

Not really as none of my friends have this kind of car considering next month ill be 16 with a 66 Fastback. The motor was rebuilt and was runnin fine then a valve broke and busted the head and hydrolocked the engine...now after it was rebuilt again it decides to do this. In less than a month i have to figure out what it is.

Fastback66,
I have a nearly-new Edelbrock 600 (less than 1000 miles) that I'm going to sell. I'll loan it to you to trouble-shoot your set-up. E-mail me your phone number and address. Maybe I can swing by this weekend.

Pull all your plugs and see how the look. Check your float level in your carb. What's your ignition timing set at?

If you have to pump it to get it going it sounds to me like your not getting enough fuel.Is this only when the motor is cold(choke problems) or does it do this all the time?It sounds like your accelerator pump may not be working properly. With the engine turned off, look down the primary side of the carb(front barrels)and push the throttle open. You should see a healthy little stream of gas squirt out in each side.It should start immediately when you crack the throttle.

yes check the accelerator pump on the front of the carb..and then check you fuel pump
diaphram. Easily done.
If the diaphram is bad it will leak out two little holes on fuel pump case.
You may not see actual fuel spraying out..but it might be wet.
Then if all else check timing.
And you referred to hydrolock...this is what happens water (hydro) is sucked down the intake and into the cylinder..water doesn't compress very well...lil brother of mine did the u-boat commander thing in his S/C t-bird...wow! piston rods looked like a pretzel.
