Father/Son Project Part 2: What Ford would you be looking for?
First, what a great site. Thanks to all who have given thier input on my previous post regarding engine choice in my father/son project. Right now leaning toward a small block, but not final yet.
The next question is which Ford to put it in. Would prefere mid to late 60's or early 70's car. A Mustang would bethe first choice but trying to keep the cost in check. We're thinking of a Torino or Cougar (close enough to a Ford for us), but welcome other ideas.
Thanks Agian

Comet/Falcon '64-65. Parts are plentiful, prices are reasonable, especially compared to mustangs and, well, I like 'em!! My second choice would be 60-66 Galaxie or 66/67 Fairlane/Comets.

I also vote 64-65 Falcon or Comet. The parts are obtainable, but also my require a little Father/Son parts spelunking which should add some fun to the proceedings. The fun of just waiting by the mailbox for parts to show up is nothing compared to finding some oddball knob, doodad or trim part you guys need in the back of a wrecking yard in a forgotten wreck. Or haggling for it at a swap meet. Plus, these cars are not as common as the Mustangs, so you get a bit more attention when you go places with it.

1966-early 1970 Falcon would be about the only choice a father/son team would be happy with!

I'd look for an early Falcon also. Alot of the parts are interchangable with early Mustangs, so there are supplies out there. Plus there were a lot made, so junkyards should have what you need also. The other good point is that you wont be building another Mustang. dont get me wrong, I like mine, but its a 71, which are few and far between compared to the 64-66 mustangs which are everywhere. Should help with the uniqueness of the project. Also a decent buildable car should be relatively easy to find.

I hafta agree with anything different than a Mustang.
It sure is neat to have a car that is not so common?
Falcons share a lot of parts with Mustangs and even the repro stuff is out there to re-do them.

Dunno... I kinda have to go with the Fairlane. It shares a lot of parts with the Mustang but has more interior room & is a really cool car. Just can't get much tire under one.

For an easier project, Falcon, because it's small, interchanges most running gear with Mustangs. Plus, they are light weight, a 302 or 351(plain or stroker) will make them fly. Since they have so much in common with Mustangs, you should be able to get a lot of help if you get in over your head. The 63-65 Sprints still one of the better looking small cars from the 60's.
For a bit more distiction, how about an early Fairlane? The 55-thru-58 Fairlanes are light, beautiful and will hold any size motor you want to put in them. They did have a rust problem in the floor pans and lower front fenders, but there are lots of parts still around. The Fairlanes and Custom (post sedans) had quite a rep. in their day.
