ok, how to adjust a Holley. Ive heard different ways.
Ok, i just finished my engine. its a shortblock 289 (40 over) with all my goodies on it. Windsor Jr heads, air-gap intake, Holley 650DP, .477 lift cam. But It runs rich, but how to fix this? I have about 50 miles on new autolite plugs and they are pretty black. I live in L.A., what size jets should i be using? It stumbles when i punch it, people say that that is usally because its lean, but the plugs say its rich. So maybe so rich that its causeing stumbling?
What size jets should i use? And how to Adjust a holley?

screw the adjustments in till the engine slows, then back them out for the best idle

I use a vacume gauge to set fuel mixture. Adjust them all the way in and then 2.5 turns out to begin. Make sure your fuel bowl levels are correct before you begin (fuel should just barely dribble out of the sight hole when correct). Adjust each screw until it reaches max vacume, then repeat the other side. Remember, too much timing or too little timing can cause a bog, too. After your adjustments, if the bog is still there, chances are you're lean. I change jets in increments of two numbers (i.e: 68 to 70, etc.) I'm sure you'll get a lot more and probably better advice than from me, so stay tuned!

I agree with Dragman64. I used the method that was posted on that website on the street driven turbocharged maverick, and still have a long way to go...but am getting 24 mpg on the highway, yet still able to maintain "tractionless" acceleration in any gear under 10 psi boost. The site is VERY helpful. You will, however, need to learn about how holley carbs work for the most part. It'll help immensly.

Fisrt...if you have a healthy cam then the vac may not be enough to hold the power valve closed and its opening too soon..So get one with a weaker spring..I won't go into numbers cause without knowing all about the engine I would steer you wrong..So take yours out, go to the parts store and get him to give you the next size down and work from there...try and see. Also if it stumbles at take off, then it could be the accelerator pump not squirting in fuel at that instant. There should be no gap under the lever at idle..also might not be getting enough fuel so the accelerator pump cam might need to be bigger...but check the gap first.

ok, here is my cam card
Lift:
intake@cam:2800 @Valve448
Exhaust@cam:2947 @Valve472 With 1.6 (which i have) rocker arm ratio
Cam timing:
.050
INTAKE
opens (5)*ATDC Closes29*ABDC Maxlift 107* Duration 204*
EXHAUST
Opens 44*BBDC Closes(10)*BTDC MaxLift 117*BTDC Duration 214*
And i dont get what you mean by the gap on the ACC. pump on the holley. I have a DP Holley, so is that on both pumps? and i dont know why there would even be a gap AT ALL!?? I mean your talking about the spring looking part that touches the pump handle right? Well if it touches the pump handle, how would there be any gap if its supposed to touch it in order to make the handle go up and down? Shouldnt it touch it?

Yep.there is a screw with a spring...it is adjustable...if you grab hold of the lever that actuates the accelerator pump diaphram, there should be no play between that and the adjuster screw...and yeah both accelerator pumps need to be adjusted the same....Also, going by your specs and I assume your carby is stock..then the power valve will be too big.
