460 from Performance Automotive Warehouse

Has anyone ever purchased an engine from P.A.W.? I am looking at there 460 engine. It's complete with seasoned block, heads, pistons on rods,etc....

Just wondering if antone has been down this road.

Thanks

You're talking about the "some assembly required" kits I'm assuming?
I've done lots of buying thru PAW and have always had good luck. One thing is you'll have to inspect everything. And clean it completely. Even if the heads are assembled, take them apart and clean everything. Crank oiling holes, block oil galley, everything.

Thanks Dacofa, I have had good luck with other parts from them and yes I was talking about "some assembly required" That is some sound advice.

I am going to put that 460 in my 77 Lincoln (Led Sled) It weighs 6461 lbs. knowing that what cam and specs would you guys recommend for this application. I do tow my buddies boat with it from time to time. Is a RV cam to small or should I step it up a little more. How about a edelbrock Performer intake and what cfm carb. I have also herd guys on this forum to go with a Coyes roller chain to get away from the retarded stock gear. Any ideas would be appreciated from the 385 series experts. Thanks again.

A RV cam, Pref. Weiand, Holley 750 with vac sec. Cloyes are good timing set. I'd advance the cam myself. You want low end torque here. Use a oil and trans coolers too. Make sure you get the oil plugs in the right hole. There is a difference. Windage tray won't hurt either.
As for the C-6 I'd use a tight convertor with a low first gear set, deep trans pan, with a shift kit. If you haven't rebuilt your trans yet, you need to start looking at it. Towing will tear them up in a hurry. A use a set of 3.25 gears.
How much weight are you looking at towing? I used a 72 LTD 2dr, 460, C-6 3.50 gearing to tow a dual axle, 18' auto trailer. About a 5000# total with tools. Mileage wasn't bad a I pulled any hill I wanted too.

Will the weind intake fit under the hood? Where are the oil holes located, in the lifter valley? When you say a tight converter do you mean a stall speed just above stock? I think the gear is probably a 279 or 300 in the 9 inch, I wonder if I should go any lower as it really cruises good on the highway. I have already cut the converters off and put 2.5 inch Flow Masters out the back. What about compression. I think from the factory this was a wimpy 8 to 1 or 8.5 to 1.

If the gears are 3.00 stay with them. If 2.79 or higher, go to 3.25s. 3.00 with a low gear first gear, will pull go then give the the same 1-1 in high gear. Use the low profile Weiand manifold. Converter, I'd use a stock stall but one for towing. I'd also check your Alt. output. You'll want something around 70+ amps output. trailers take away a lot of power with those electic brakes and lighting.

While the stock cast iron intake doesn't get much respect it works very well and on an RV type engine that won't see over 5500 it is tough to beat.I have an intake shootout article where several intakes where tested on a dyno. The stock intake and the edelbrock performer both put out a very flat torque curve with both pulling over 500 ft/lbs of torque, the performer intake was a little better than the ford and is much lighter.I'm not sure what low profile weiand intake dacofa is referring to but the stealth was included in this shootout.

I have already put a 70 amp alt. on the engine. Does weiand make a low profile Stealth intake? Hey frdnut that sounds like an intresting article on those intakes you put on the dyno , any way you could post them? As far as rv cams go who makes the best for this application?....Crane,Comp,Lunati. Do they make the stock rocker arms with the roller tip, if so are they any good? I'm thinking of keeping my ford duraspark and installing a MSD 6a box with blaster coil.

Ok this was an article from a magazine I didn't do this pesonally. The engine was a 460,9.4:1 with a .518/.513L and 216/228@.050 camshaft. The engine had JBA shortie headers with the bump ground out of the exhaust port(good for 13hp) but no further porting and a 750 Holley.Ford cast iron intake-520.2ft/lbs@3250rpm and 409.4hp at 5000rpm.Offenhauser single plane-424.2hp@5000rpm and 490 ft/lbs@3500 Wieand Stealth-429.4hp@5000 and 505.7 ft/lbs@3500 Ford power parts high rise dual plane 423.6hp@5000 and 497.7ft/lbs@3500,same intake with a notch cut in the divider under the carb-433.4hp and 508.7 ft/lbs of torque.Edelbrock performer-434.6hp@5000 and 518.9 ft/lbs of torque @3500.The ford and the E-brock pulled over 450 ft/lbs of torque from 2500-4500 for the ford and 2500-5000 with the e-brock.The other manifolds were a little more peaky. This isn't to say the other manifolds are no good it just shows you what works well for probably what is a typical 460 buildup. You'll need lots of torque to move that big heavy beast of yours

My limited knowledge on the Stealth series 429-460 intakes says this: They are tall mothers. I believe the port size is the only difference between the 8012 and the 8021. You want the 8012/non-CJ. I'd go with the performer 'cause you probably arent' going to be goosing it up past 5000 too often. Use a spacer under the carb if you want more plenum volume. You'll should have room for it. A stock intake with spacer and a Performer intake put the carb at approximately the same height relative to the motor.
I would also use a small cam. Bigger cams need bigger rpm. If you don't spin that engine fast a big cam will just kill your torque as in it will be non-existant!! A CC 255DEH or the smallest extreme 4x4 grind they make is a good starting point.
Good luck with the tank.
