Man. that's one light maverick! Seriously, though, Chilly's on the right track. It will take a lot of cam, lot of compression, and big carb/intake. With a stock maverick front chassis...you're pretty much limited to a 1 5/8 or 1 3/4" header primary size. I'm running the same basic car, a gutted '75 model, ran a 393w all year til it let loose. Best was a 6.58/110 in the 1/8, 1.39 60' (footbrake). Car weighs 2700 lb w/ 160 lb driver. Working on a stock-stroke "W" for this year. I think a 347 would be great for a mav, but you'll have to figure out a way to get all that power to the ground! Luckily, a mav's chassis is pretty solid and the rear suspension works pretty darn nice for a factory setup!

I had a 347 built for my Maverick as follows. I used an Eagle stroker kit, forged steel crank, forged H-beam rods and 13 to 1 SRP pistons. Crower solid lifter cam, .605-.619 lift and 266-276 @ .050. Victor jr. heads out of the box, Victor jr. intake, 930cfm carb, 1 5/8 Hooker super comp headers, 1968 Mexican block with main girdle, MSD billet distributor. Engine was dynoed @ 500hp @ 7000rpm and 430 ft.lbs @ 5250rpm. Car weighs 2820lbs without driver and runs 11.0's @ 121mph @2500 ft. corrected altitude. It has a 5000 stall 8" convertor. I run 28x10.5 ET Drag slicks with Caltracs. Best 60ft is 1.53 with the front wheels up. That ET converts to about 7.2 sec. in 1/8 mile. The only mismatch in setup may be the headers but I haven't found anyone that makes 1 3/4 " headers for a Maverick. Does anyone know of a source? This engine in a 2200lb car should produce about a 6.6sec 1/8 mile. Hopefully this is useful.

With a 302 based engine, you'll need all the gear you can get taking off... which begs the question, "Why doesn't the car have a C4?"

Cubic inches are your friend. If you can run a 351W based engine, things would be a LOT easier. You might even get those #6208 Hooker Super Comp 351W swap headers (for 64-70 mustangs) to work with that maverick. Someone here got them to work in a granada with minimal work.

Good Luck!

nope...6208's wont work in a maverick.
tried it, ruined one side...then broke down and made my own. And that was with chopped towers!
