What would it take to run 7.50's with a 460

Thinking of putting a 460 in my 68 mustang bracket race, thought this would be the cheapest way to run 7.50's. You could build a fairly simple and cheap motor that will run for years.
Something like 10:1, with either a Comp 282S or even one of the new Extreme hydraulic cams, RPM intake, 950HP, 4000 stall, C6, 4.56, & 28" or 29" slicks.
Figured it would go 7.50 or better and run for years with little maintence.

With little maint.? Don't think so. Even if you don't race it that much valve springs weaken fast. You'll need lots of spring pressure and that doesn't last long. Then then is the plugs that won't like idling around town. The trans will have to hold up to the HP and that will put extra pressure on the U-joints. High HP= more maint. just the way it goes.

I'm assuming eighth mile? I'm just playing with the locals & running 6.40's in a #3000 car. You'd be suprised how quick you can go on a budget. Be ready to spend some real cash for heads though!

I don't want to step on any toes but first of all this is race car only, no idling around town will be taking place. Second planning on shifting at 5800, I am sure the springs will need check/changed but I really don't think it will very often. I am sure if main concern was running as fast as possible yes but this is bracket racing.
Friend of mine runs low 8's just won the points this year in footbrake class and this was the seventh year on the motor and he has never touch it since he put it in the car except to change the plugs & change the oil. plus the car runs basically the same times as it did when he first put it in.

A buddy of has an engine like this in his 69 Mach 1. It's gutted, so it's a little lighter than normal weight. About 3000 -3100 lbs w driver. It runs 7.20's in the 1/8.

Combo: .030 over 460, TRW forged mini-dome pistons, stock crank and rods + good rod bolts. Hyd flat tappet cam. .560 lift 246° @ .040. Home ported DOVE heads, roller rockers, out of the box Offy Port-O-Sonic intake, very old 850 Holley DP carb, Duraspark dist w/ MSD 6AL box. Runs an alt and an electric water pump drive. Car has a C-6 with full man valve body, 10" 4400 stall converter. Header Total Performance conversion headers with Dynomax race bullet mufflers. Runs 4.56 gears, 28.5X 10.5 MT slicks. Shifts it at 5900 rpm.

It runs 7.20's @ 94 on the motor when bracket racing. He plays around a little with some heads up stuff and nitrous. It has gone easy 6.80's @ 102 on a 150 shot.

My car idles all day in 100+ Oklahoma heat & hasn't seen a spring problem in years. If you keep things simple & think about all the problems that might arise, you'll get to make a ton of passes. I used to go 300 passes a year with no valve train related problems... there are ways. Good heads, good chassis, you don't need a big bumpstick. I expect to be in the 5.90's this weekend with a 200 shot & all I have for a cam is a .640 street roller. Car runs 9.80 in the quarter with no shot.
