How do I build a killer street driven 460?

I guess what I'm asking for is some recipes for a street driven bad ass big block. I will want to keep it on pump gas, N/A, carberated, and it will need to be reliable. A stroker would really trip my trigger. That might be the route I go so any thoughts along those lines will be appreciated. I know enough about the 385 series to get close but I'm really looking for a proven combo. Any and all help is appreciated.

This is not something that I'm going to order parts for tomorrow, but it will happen eventually. My Elite needs some serious grunt and I would love to get that baby into the 13's. Plus a 500+ cube, 500+ horsepower, and 500+ ft/lb big block is something I've always wanted to build.

Thanks everybody.

How do I build a killer street driven 460?

Well, if your serious and not worried about $$'s I may have a deal for you!First, check this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...09453&rd=1

Then, if this gets your blood going, I have a new set of Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Comp Cam rollers, pushrods, MSD Crank Trigger, MSD flat cap dist,ARP studs /bolts, Milodon Deep-pan and pick-up, Ford racing covers and a whole bunch of "stuff" for a BBF.
Have to liquidate due to illness. I am down but not out. Just have to change a few things and hope for the best.
Any questions, feel free to ask. I may not respond right away, but either myself or 1 of my sons will.
Fred

How do I build a killer street driven 460?

If you wanna keep it affordable, I'd say something like a 235 duration hydraulic lifter camshaft, good ported heads, a Weiand stealth intake, 850 carb, long tube headers, and about 9.5:1 compression ratio ought to put a smile on your face. If you've got a little more to spend than that, go for some aftermarket heads like the Edelbrocks. And if you've still got some change left over, a good hydraulic roller cam wouldn't hurt any. I'll probably be having a similar dilemma next summer if I decide to rebuild the Bronco's 460. But I'm looking for gobs of torque, and around 400-450hp. Depending on how much cash I have at the time, I might end up doing a stroker with ported D3 heads (I'm almost done porting them) and maybe a roller cam.

Building a 13 second 460 in a car like you've got is not hard at all. The biggest part of the formula is gears, converter, and traction. Run gears in the 3.5 or 3.73 range, and use a good 2500 to 2800 stall converter. Build the engine with compression in the mid 9's, use an early (pre-71) timing chain gear set, headers, preferably with 1 7/8 minimum diameter tubes, run open on the track or with dual 3" exhaust for the street, and a 750 to 850 cfm carb with an RPM Performer or Stealth intake. For a cam, use something like the Comp Cams 34-236-5 Extreme Energy grind (226-236 .554-.557 112 l/s +4) or the 34-241-5 (234-244 .574-.576 112 l/s +4) if you want something a little more radical. If the car won't hook and spins on you, find a set of 26 x 10 slicks for it. If you do a little bit of exhaust porting on the heads the above combination could easily get you into the 12's and still be pretty streetable. I hope that helps point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the replys! I figure I'll stay with cast iron heads and just port the crap out of the exhaust. Right now I run the 210/218 CC extreme grind and like it very much but in true gearhead fashion, I want more! My best guess is that I have right at 300-325 horse and 400 ft/lb torque now. That's with my D3's and stock compression. I had hoped a bigger cam, more compression, headers, and gears would get me into the 12's.
Scott's website is pretty sweet no doubt. I read everything I can on that forum.
Blown 54: I saw that blower on ebay the other day, even before you posted it here. That setup would be kick ass, but I don't think I can swing that kind of money. It's worth every penny, but I'll save a blower for my "future" '34 Ford 5 window coupe!
I'll check back in tomorrow. Thanks again.
