Need help Converting to manual steering from power

I want to convert my P/S in my 65 to manual.

Where my pressure hose goes into my control valve there is the piece that mates to the flare in the pressure hose to seal the connection, well that piece has been flatened and wont seal now, fluid squirts out between the threaded fitting and the steel line, to add to this mess I tried dissconnecting the pressure hose and plugged it so I could drive, well after about 2 miles the pump got so hot it almost melted, so now I need a pump also. I dont want to spend hundreds to fix and still have leeks and hose blow outs. Please help.

What parts do I need? Can I do this at home?

Thanks.

yes this is very simple..
Basically your removing the power steering ram and slave. Of course then you will need new driver side inner tie rod and a manual center link. And remove the power ram mount from the frame rail.
But keep the steering box. This box is a quicker ratio than a stock manual.

So I have to replace the center link? No way to remove the control valve and ram and use an adapter of some kind?

The adaptor you see in the adds is for 67' and newer....

All you have to change is the driver side inner tie rod and a manual center link.... It is not that hard to replace the center link.... I too converted to manual steering for the same reason you are... Tired of fixing it to once again have another leak e.t.c. somewere else... I like it alot better manual... The p/s in early Fords is way too sensitive I think...

Good Luck, Billy

one more thing- Add a Shelby quicksteer pitman arm for less slop, and better control. The flipside of all this conversion is parking speed steering...eat your wheaties I did the conversion a year or so back, and like it alot.

Thanks for the info.

Here is what I have done untill I can get a manual center link and the parts to convert all the way.

I removed the p/s pump and installed a late model smog pump ideler pully in its place, fabbed a simple bracket from some flat stock and installed a 83" long belt, removed the hoses from the control valve and plugged the holes in the control valve with fittings.
Do you think this will work untill the complete conversion?

This will make it so I can drive it. What do you think?

I have seen machined steel pieces made that replace the power steering contol valve. with this setup, you unscrew the control valve from the center link and put this piece in it's place, screwing it on to the center link and attaching it to the pitman arm. dont't know how well they work, haven't used one, try Mustangs Unlimited, or other such suppliers.

As stated in above post I believe that is for 67 and newer... Not for 65-66'....

That part is for 67 and newer. I had to replace the center link and outter tie rod end on my 65 comet. Drives better i think without the P/S.
