I did a real nice one in my bros truck. Balanced bottom end, block and heads both cut .020 to up compression. Cliffords smaller cam (for torque, its a truck motor) 4 barrel manifold, dual outlet headers, and a holley. Lil bugger was a screamer.

Yep, used to run them in stock cars in the late 70's-mid 80's. The 240 head is the one you want to use for the smaller combustion chamber. Make sure the line bore is good in the block for that long crank. Bigger valves are good and pay alot of attention to porting on the exhaust side. Headders are a must and dont overcarb it. I had good luck with a 4412 500 cfm 2bbl but a small 4bbl maybe better on the street. Offy makes a good mainifold for it but I never tried the clifford who if I remember makes a "dual" plane style for it. I used to run Crower cams and I assume they still list them but mine were custom ground. I useally run it in the 6 cly class with a 1bbl but sometimes run against the v8's with the 2bbl and headders. It more than held its own. That 240-300 is probably the toughest motor Ford ever built. A picture of one of my cars is in this months Mustang and Ford mag in the Cougar section. Look at the picture if you have it and look at the offset hole in the hood.

I agree 100%! Great engine...now, to think that Ford could have built a 24v crossflow type head for it, it would be a definete screamer! Even with a 240, it'd be mean. Look at GM's new Trailblazer, now back to inline 6 power, and it makes like 270 Hp--not to mention the torque down low.

Well, you could always make a deal with an Aussie for one of their cross flow (stock!)heads.

If ya want to get some power out of a 300-I6, take a look at putting 390/360 pistons in it.
