c4 'shaft trun forward, bu no reverse

Need some help, rebuilt c4 was driven recenctly, smooth shifts, everything's fine. I try to back the car out of the garage, a week ago, trans takes up in reverse, car doesn't move, a touch of throttle and the car moves, okay the rear brakes are too tight. Today i check and find the brakes are too tight, back them off. Now with the rear end on stands, drums off, the driveshaft turns easy in forward direction, but will not turn in reverse direction. I backed of the band adjuster nearest the rear of the trans, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

damn, I've had this problem, but cant for the life of me figure out what the fix was. Seems to me it was the front band being too tight, but I'm going off of my foggy memory. If I think of it, I'll post it. Good luck

Mavman, rub that memory real hard, I gonna pull the trans tommorow! I'll loosen the front band and see if that helps. My local tranny man said the "w" word. As in " i dunno, maybe something welded, it don't take long" sigh ^&%$&%^$*$^.

The more I think about it, I think that the front band being too tight was our problem. I remember tightening it to hold the clutches as I installed the pump and then remember climbing back under the car to adjust the bands. I'm almost positive that was our problem.

I think it was as well. Mine was too tight & after slipping it decided to drive forward in any gear, even reverse.

Thanks, Mavman, and Qtrmiler, you both were real close. After pulling the valve body, i found the front band strut was mislocated on the band, still engaged on the piston rod, but cocked on the band. After putting the strut were it belonged, the driveshaft could be turned both directions. When tightened the front band adjuster finger tight, the 'shaft would turn forwards, but not reverse, duplicating the failure. The strut, when cocked had the effect of making the band too tight. This locks the 'shaft against reverse rotation because for the 'shaft to turn backwards, the input shell must be free to turn. Hopefully by this weekend i'll have it back together. I'm hoping that since it drove okay before, it'll be okay now. I didn't find any big pieces in the pan, what a deal!
