1965 coupe Questions

Just purchased a 1965 coupe today,I have owned several fox bodies but this is my first old school,Factory 289 w/4 barrel, no rust .auto, nice little car. My questions are as such; where can I get the maier front air dam I see on some of the cars here?,What backspacing is required to fit 17"X 8" wheels and tires all the way around?,Does anyone make the pillar mount guage pods like for the fox bodies?, Will the T bird rear or the new 94 up rear ends with the disc brake assemblies fit like on fox bodies?,Will an AOD bolt into this car relatively hassle free?,What mods/repairs(relatively inexpensive) would you guys suggest for the tired stock suspensions Thanks for the help !( I need it! )

how inexpensive is inexpensive? everything costs money

personally, when resto-moding a new old rig I like to start with stopping. Brakes are more important than just about anything.
Front discs are the best first investment, if it didn't come with. Many bolt on kits available, many junkyard recipes.

suspension is number 2 on my list
swaybars, springs, shocks, negative wedge ("the shelby mod&quot, subframe connectors, polyurethane bushings

Late '70's Lincoln/Versailles 9" rear with discs is a common rear-end swap...std. 8" rear is good for 350-400HP if your not running slicks

Powertrain is an as you go type of upgrade. Do the homework especially the math

those are the deal when it comes to websites for serious speed and handling parts.
look at most of it..the parts can be at your local short track racing shops for half the price at times.
17 x 8 bs as per global west is 4.75 and 5.00
but this depends on the rims used. They also throw in a disclaimer,,,we recommend you measure for your application.
I ran into a slight problem when I ordered some 15 in rims. I ordered 15x8 4in BS. W 4 1/2 bolt pattern and 5 lug. Some how they really screwed up the numbers and sent me 15x8 with 4 1/2 bs 4 1/2 bolt pattern and 5 lug. So spacers and longer studs had to be applied.

1965 coupe Questions

I really don't want to invest more than about 2 grand in it after I get it painted(most of my money goes to my first love Motorcycle Dragracing, I have an 86 suzuki gsxr 750 with a big bore 1100 engine and big shot of NOS.Every trick done ,NO WHEELIE BARS just a long arm and a 7" slick. Best pass to date for my 240 lbs is a 1.31 60',5.59 1/8, and 8.76 1/4.Trust me with no bars it is quite a ride. I have a 90 1100 that I am in the process of fitting a turbo on, 200+ hp on pump gas! Yes please! what a streetbike it will be.) anyway back to the car I am going to paint it white with blue shelby stripes and add the maier air dam. Since it will never be any where near as fast as either of my bikes and will be a driver/streetcar only Ifigured I would leave the engine alone, All the interior is new so that just leaves me with redoing the suspension and adding some bigger/wider wheels and tires and rear disc, already has front. Some day when my money is right I would consider an overdrive tranny , A/C and a set of low gears as well a 400+ CU. IN. stroker windsor but for now just the basics. What suspension mods do you suggest for the street?specifically?

Well the shelby mod(dropping UCA 1", many places sell templates to get the holes right) will make a big difference. Then go for a set of 620lb coils or if you want to spend a little more, progressive rate coils. Then get a good set of shocks, cant go wrong with Koni's but if that costs too much the offerings from Spax, Edelbrock and KYB are nice as well. Mustangs are so light in the rear end they dont really need rear disc brakes, I would just go with some big drums maybe a power booster and spend money elsewhere, I wish I had done that before I wasted money on a rear disc conversion. Hope this helps.

This is the info I have on 17" wheels for '65 -- 66s:

17 x 7 BS 4.250, Max recommended tire size P205/50ZR17
17 x 8 BS 4.500, rear only, Max recommended tire size P235/45ZR17

With careful measurement you might could get 17 x 8s on the front.
