Getting a 460 in a '78 Bird

Hello,

I am very interested in dropping a 460 in a '78 tbird. I would probably run a c4 to begin with. What would i do for motor mounts, headers, oil pan, and would it fit under a stock hood? Thanks,

Nick

If I remember correctly, this engine was available in this car from the factory? Should be no problem.

I think in '77 when they changed the whole car, they dropped the 460 and had the 302 stock with a 351W and 400 as an option. From '73-'76 they put 460's in. Would i need to bend up some custom headers? Thanks,

Nick

Not sure, but isnt that year model a "Fox" platform, like a fairmont? If so...yea, it'll go in just fine. Youll need mounts for a Fox mustang most likely.

No, those 78-79 T-Birds were full size frame cars.

I think that swap to a 460 would be pretty easy to do?

Lot's of room under there and maybe some nice flowing cast exhaust manifolds like the 460 PIs from 72 would save you trouble of having headers made up?

I'll bet everything from a big 73-78 LTD would work on that car?

Don't know about 78 or 79 but I know for a fact they put a 460 in the tbird in 77 as I've seen one years ago.

You could get the 460 in all three year. My sister inlaw had a 79 cougar with a 460.

Thanks for the info, I'll look for a BB LTD then. I have a big tbird book that has all the info from '55 to '97. It doesnt say that the 460 was an option for any of those years. But who knows, maybe they made a mistake! Thanks,

NIck

I'm fairly certain the 460 never was offered in the 78-79 T-Birds.

Ya never know but,I think the biggest engine was the 400 in those years.

Anyway, the 73-78 big LTDs were pretty common with 460s and I think all the brackets and pullies should clear your Birds chassis fine?

I just went to grab my 1978-1979 Ford "Suggested Retail Prices" booklet from the basement. It's a little booklet that the Ford salesmen carried with them to sell Ford cars back in 1978-1979.

It shows all the options and prices for the Ford cars from those years.

It only shows the 302 CID being standard engine with the 351 2-V as a $263.00 option. for the T-bird in those years.

No biggie, your car will still fit a 460 with room to spare!
