570 HP Street 460

Looking through my back issues of Hot Rod for some tech articles to build a mild 460, I came across the Feb 2000 issue where they built a 570 HP 460. Anyone familiar with this build up?? It ran 9.95:1 compression, and used a pair of Trick Flow Cobra-Jet heads, p/n 52436001. Anyone heard of these heads? Are they still available? They flowed decent and were nicely priced (back in 2000 anyway). Just wondering if anyone has heard of these....I can try to scan the article if anyone is interested.

Thanks!
Pat

I'd like to see that article, if you wouldn't mind scanning it.

I'm aiming for that HP number with my 466.

The flow numbers for those heads in the article, as in most mags, are grossly inflated, but they are still available

I'll see what I can do. Basically they bored a 460 .030 over, std stroke crank, eagle rods, Lunati hyd cam (242/255, .545/.540, 108 ctrs. The heads had a minor street/strip bowl and valve job and flowed 340 cfm intake/220 exh at .600 lift, 28" water. They dynoed it with a Stealth intake, 1000 cfm reworked Holley and truck headers (all they could find to fit the dyno - 1 7/8" 43" long primaries). Numbers were 500 ft-lbs from 3000 to 5400, with a peak of 552@4000. Peak HP was 550@5800. Vol efficiency peaked at 108%@5400.

Then they put on a Victor Jr. intake, and torque jumped to 572 ft-lbs, and HP was 570.

The most exotic part of this build up was the Trick flow heads, and they were only $1100. Course there was the $700 Eagle rods, and $667 JE pistons, and $754 port/valve job, but those I think you can find a little cheaper (I hesitate to use that word, as it implies inferior quality or work).

I'll try to get it scanned.

Yes I agree that the numbers are probably inflated, as getting 220 cfm at .600 lift on a "Ford" 460 exhaust port is difficult, as is the 340 cfm on the intake side. However they seem to be a reasonably priced aluminum head that flows decent for a street engine.

For the amount of money I'd rather do a set of D0VE's. Cheaper & will flow as well. There are many heads out there that are a better bargain.

Can you name a few?? I'm not trying to be an PITA, just trying to learn about what heads out there are good for a street/strip 460. For a low budget, do you recommend a pair of ported DOVE's?? I realize the trick flow heads in the article flow just as well as a set of DOVE's, but they certainly don't weigh as much. Now is that a consideration on a street car? For me, probably not, I'd probably be just as happy and never know the difference with a set of ported DOVE's. Course I'll be sneezing cast iron for a week. Just looking for some info.
Thanks!

Wear a mask man, we might learn something from you someday so try to stick around! If you aren't concerned about shock towers, the A-460 is about as good as it gets. For a stock exhaust port, you can't beat a Blue Thunder. Fords new Super Cobra Jet shows promise, but from what I've seen they are more hype than a good head. 429/460 PI heads are a very good head but are way too hard to find. Bang for the buck goes to the DoVE head with a stock intake valve & bigger exhaust valve, some port woth & chamber work. They do make some very nice affoedable power.
