porting heads

When i take off my cast sr heads i'm going to get them flowed then ported to match my new cam, engine is 408W, what should be done to the heads as far as port job, they are already cnc'ed, like to get around 280\190, or better, my cam is hy roller 218 228 536 536 112 now looking into the comps cam XE282HR or trick flow,s hy roller, they have 3 to chose from, thinking of the middle one would fit the bill, any ideas?

Not sure what your "plan" is with your car, but it seems that you want a hot street/bracket setup.... The comp cam you listed is more for computer controlled cars "wide lobe separation 110" if you car is computer controlled then that would be a good choice. If not, you may want to check out a different "magnum roller". Just ask the cam manufacture if the stock h-bar setup will work with the lift, you may have to uprade to the link bar hyd rollers to achieve the lift your after, and they are not cheap.....may as well go solid roller.

Solid roller setup, there are plenty of grinds in the .610-.630 range that would be easy on parts/no maintance.

What is the plan for the car? What is the car, trans, rear end, etc?

The sr's, if done properly, can get to 300cfm flow @ .550 - about what that 408 needs.

Of all the cams you list I would go with the TFS Stage 3. You need at least 230 duration to get enough air into that 408.

thanks guys, the car is 69mach1,408w, c-4 full manual, 2500 11'' stall, 3.50 posi, engine now is 408w, sportmans block, machined, 7 qt oil pan,sr heads cnc program, port matched to stealth, hy roller 218 228 536 536 112, 750 BIGS HP DP 1\3\4 supercomps, x-pipe, 2.50 ex,1.6 rockers,i would like street and strip if it can be done without losing that good low torque, 380ft lbs @3100, i was going to get vic jr heads, but i think the windsors are good for my driving mostly street, my range is 2500 to 5500 if that with some strip, so there it is, now the guys wants to put on vic jr manifold ported to my heads is that going to be alright for street driving? he said i will not lose any torque with that manifold and much bigger cam, so im just trying to get the right package before i spend the money, hope you guys can help before i do this, just dont have a dyno to see what works and what will not. thanks again

Anytime you port "increace the cc's of the port" you will loose bottom end TQ. Also, when you increase duration you will loose bottem end TQ. I"ve played with an engine pogram and by poring your heads/installing vic jr...I saw a decrease of 20ft lb TQ untill 4000rpm's then it had an increase of around 65hp 80Tq up to 6500 rpm. Then I played with a few different cams....the tfs II only lost 10ft lbs tq below 4000, but was not much different than what you have now on top end.I'm sure thes engine programs are somewhat close to real world numbers. If you do go porting, you should change your convertor and gears....so everything matches.

If I were you, I'd add a 125 shot of nitrous for those special moments, and keep the low end tq you have now for daily driving.

scott, yea i dont really need more power unless i race it ever weekend, which i dont, i was thinking of n20 just to have when i need it, i have good 425 hp at flywheel now, 380ft lbs@3100, thats what you need to get moving torque, so maybe i'll lighten it up a little alum brakes,125 shot just to have and just go from there, hate to spend all that money for top end stuff when i need good low end mid range, my cam makes power up to 6 grand so i dont really need to play with it, got me thinking now, i just thoughtthat bigger would be better, thats why i think my engine guy put in that small cam for street duty. thanks we'll see which way i go.
