289/302 In a 64 Fairlane

Ive got a 66 289 block, A friend of mine is Boreing it and Honing it as we speak. Im going with a keith Black flat top, with speed pro moly rings,Ive got a 302 engine that was given to me a guy i know completely rebuilt it with a summit rebuild kit even a new crank ,when he tested everything he discovered the block was cracked so he gave it to me out of frustration,I was wondering if the new parts in the 302 would do me any good to put in the 289 block and should i stick with a 289 crank or go with 302 one?..Also i found 351 windsor heads of a 70 or 71 motor, the guy that has them put 400 dollars into them last year and offered me them for 250...Will these work with my block and what kind of compression can i expect with the pistons im using.. Any imput would be helpful thanx....

I'd stick with the 302, just get another block....you can almost get them for free.
The heads would be a good purchase as long as they have been set up for screw-in studs and maybe have larger valves----but have them mag checked first.
Also, dont forget that a 64 Fairlane will have the 5 bolt bellhousing (if its still the stock trans to the car), and the later 289 and all 302's will be 6 bolt bellhousings, so this will need to be changed out also.

The 302 stuff should drop right into your newly machined 289 block. For the 302, they made the cylinders a little longer on the bottom end for more stability of the piston at BDC, but I don't believe it is much of an issue. I would use the 289 block, especially since it is already (being) machined. Those heads have combustion chambers of around 60 cc. The compression ratio would be around 9:1 with the 289 and 9.4:1 with the 302. That is assuming that he didn't shave the heads. The combustion chambers are reduced by 1 cc per .0055" on those heads. According to an old Ford book I have, .050" is the limit.

Don't forget that 302 rods are a different length than 289 rods. Other than that, go for it.

you put 289 rods on a 302 crank, the pistons will stick out of the block

To clear a few things up....

289/early 302 blocks are functionally interchangable. You just have to make sure the steam holes (little 1/4" holes in the block's deck surface) line up with holes in the head.

But, don't sweat it... this is easy. Looking at the cylinder, the 289 block has it's steam hole at 12 o'clock. Then look at the head and see if there is a matching passage. If not, (probably not) a new 1/4" hole will need drilled through the block's deck surface that matches the passage on the head. Use the head gasket as a guide to drill the new hole.

This might sound intimidating, but it's not that difficult once you print this out and take it to the garage and start looking at things.

As for the internals...

289's and 302's use the same pistons. The extra 1/8" stroke is made up with the pistons and rods. As long as the 302 crank AND rods are used, you're in the clear... assuming they are pre-81 parts that use the 28 oz-in harmonic balancer and flywheel. (The early crank will have a raised ridge around the rear main seal area at the back of the crank.) The later (50 oz. one piece seal) cranks have no raised ring around this portion.

Using the early 302 internals in the 289 block is no problem whatsoever. Just be sure to line up the steam holes.

Good Luck!
