Shaft rockers on AFR 185 heads

I purchased as set of Summit shaft rockers for a SBF awhile back off Ebay and never used them. They are supposed to work on the old Dart Windsor heads. I also have a set of AFR 185 heads that need a valve seat replaced. What I would like to do is try to set these AFR heads up with shaft rockers and put them on the 331 solid roller motor to stabilize and calm down the noisy valvetrain I get from the Twisted Wedge heads. Would the valve locations on the AFR heads be the same as the Dart Windsor heads? The studs match up perfectly on the shaft mounting plate. Does anyone know if this might work out?

Here's a picture of the shaft rockers sitting on the AFR 185 heads:

Thanks.

The rockers are 1.5/1.6 ratio(8 each). Now I have to decide which valve to put the 1.6 on.

Roller cam specs are 230/236, 110 LSA, .589/.602 lift. The AFR 185 heads seem to be leaning toward the intake side as far as flow goes, so it would make sense to put the 1.5 ratio on the intakes and use the 1.6 to offset the exhaust.

Dart Windsor heads use small Chevy valve spacing. Yes, the valves are not oriented exactly the same as stock ford. They have been moved... and you actually have to use small block chevy guideplates! Those heads even use chevy length valves. Unless they have changed since they were introduced, that's still the way they are. They were one of the first aftermarket heads for the small ford. The manufacturer pretty much took their chevy head and turned it into a ford unit.

I see you have already mocked up the rockers onto the heads. If the rollers line up just right over the valve stems, and the geometry checks out fine... You got lucky.

Good Luck!

Well, guess what? I got the rollers and valve tips to line up perfectly with the bronze shims in the kit. Now all I have to do is get the pushrod geometry right.

A nice thing about this shaft rocker setup is guide plates and stud girdles are not needed, and there is virtually no rocker movement except up and down. Also the pushrod cups are adjustable for lash setting. Ford shoulda done this on SBF a long time ago.

Most shaft rockers need a very carefully checked pushrod length. There is a hole in the rocker and adjuster that needs to be lined up well enough to get oil from pushrod to the bearings in the rocker. There is instructions for this on the Jesel site.
Pushrod length also will not affect your geometry of rocker roller to valve stem. Need spacers under the support for that.

On the summit rockers u do not have to worry about getting the adjuustment nut to certain depth for oiling it is a straight through set-up. The only ones that need to be carefully adjusted is the TnD'S. I bought a set of these on ebay for $90. i cant use the
rockers on the canfields i have so i am going to make my own rockers and just use there bearings and hardware. The 1.5 rocker is intended for use on the intake. The summit tip roller is of cheap design it is only a pin with bushing.

As a side note, I just finished my 75 351w heads for the turbo maverick...installed chevy 1.94/1.60 valves, chevy 7/16" studs, and chevy guideplates. No problems yet...everything works fine! If theres any difference in the valvespacing, it's not much, probably not enough to worry about with a little 306 inch 5000 max rpm motor.

Great information !! Thanks guys.

I'll let you know how the shaft system works out when I get it all together. It may take a little time but should be worth it on a nice roller cam setup. The think the shaft rockers have been discontinued from Summit but are still showing up on Ebay from time to time. Compared to new prices for Jesel, Crower, or T&D, it's a steal. The support frame also matched up to the other SBF heads that I had laying around. The frame is one piece aluminum and I figure I can center the roller travel on the valve tips just by changing valve tip length or milling the bottom of the support.
