351 hood clearance?

Hood clearance for 351w with victor intake on 68 turn signal hood? I refuse to put a scoop on this car (sleeper approach). Any info would be appreciated, Thanks.

351 hood clearance?

My 79 Coupe with 351W required me to put a scoop on it. The car came with a 5.0. I have the Weiand Stealth intake which is a high rise dual plane intake. The height of my intake coupled with the height of the 351W made it impossible to clear the hood. Your Victor intake sits pretty high and will probably require some mods. I am sure you will have to make some kind of mod on your hood. You might try to put spacers in the hinges that attach to the hood. That will give it the early sixties style "cowl" induction look, but it will clear. Just a thought.

This is for a 68 Mustang. Wish they made those for us vitage guys. Looks like I might have to look into fabricating my own drop mounts or stick with an RPM Performer.

A 69-70 mach 1 scoop will give you a couple of inches of clearance and still looks stock.I really don't like the look of it on the hood with the signal lights(my own opinion) but you could always just put it on a plain hood and save your nice hood in case you ever want to change back.

Your 68 should have the same height engine bay as my 69. I had it 11 years, but sold it 3 months ago.

It had a stroker 351W with a Vic Jr intake. It fit under the stock hood. Barely. I used a 13" Ford Motorsport drop base breather (you can still get them for $35) and a 2.25" tall K&N element (part # 2865). I even removed the wingnut and used a bolt as the bolt head wasn't as tall as a nut/stud. I also made a torque strap so the engine wouldn't rock over and hit the hood when I nailed it.

I ran it without a spacer under the carb. No room. Later on I added a Boss 429 scoop and cut the hood under it. Added a spacer and a 4" tall K&N. Car ran better in the heat, but stayed the same in cool weather. Guess the only diff was the cooler air. Having the spacer made no difference.

A pic:

David Cole
