torque convertor cheating

due to lack of funds (all the time when owning cars!!) I want to fit a 4.1 6cyl torque donut to my 302c to up the stall. i have heard of it done and people seem to be happy, just have to drill new mounting holes in original (spare) flexiplate and away we go.... any horror stories out there or do's or dont's?
thanks fellas

From my experience with using the smaller OEM converters on V8 engines, they don't hold up well and tend to stall higher and higher under harsh strip conditions and they eventually wear the clutches out in the tranny. On the street with a cooler, it may be OK.

Umm,it's not quite that easy.A 4.1 6 cyl convertor will have a 10+1/2" bolt spacing pattern on the convertor to flexplate mount. If you have to redrill your flexplate i assume you have a large type c4/c10 type with an 11+7/16" bolt pattern.
You cant just redrill the flexplate since the 6 cylinder convertor is shorter than what you currently have. You cant swap flexplates either since one has 157teeth and the larger is 164 teeth.
You will have to get the mount points on the 6 cyl convertor altered by a convertor shop to make sure all lines up correctly.

I did this too on our maverick years ago. Converter was the original one that was behind the 250 six, installed it behind the 302 (with the proper flexplate). Stalled @ 1400

I have done this little trick before and it worked well for awhile. used a Pinto 4cyl. converter #F38 they are high stall. the converter is 10" 26 spline .750" pilot. and they have a 10.5" bolt pattern. I had to use a clutch input shaft pilot bearing bored out to .750" in the back of the crank to properly position the pilot of the converter and had to shape 4 raised areas in the flex plate for the new holes to be drilled for the studs after all of this it fit fine and stalled to about 2300-2700RPMs. Lasted for a long time considering it was a 100,000 mile converter to start with. I was alot like you, I just wanted to try it and had heard of others that had done it so I figured it was worth a try. I think anymore I would just get a good converter they really are not that bad and if you figure the cost of a flexplate, pilot and the work to do it I think that a cheaper Dacco would be money well spent. you can get a nice medium stall 2300-2500 for $146.00 US from www.bulkpart.com these would work well in a lower powered car not for serious racing though. Good Luck
