Dist gear worn -it shouldnt...which dist gear to use

I have 2000 miles or so on my 282 Extreme Energy Hyd roller. The cam card said " no bronze dist gear necessary" so I just used the existing cast iron gear. Now that is about 10-15 % worn ( 100%= tooth breakage). Is this wear rate normal and which gear would be the best ?
Engine is a stroker 393 W with stock Ford electronic distributor. It spins freely.

You might want to place a call to "Comp Cams", to confirm the info on the card.

Many Hydraulic Roller cams have the "Cast Iron" band pressed onto the cam for the drive gear off the cam and in those cases a factory stye "Cast Iron" dist gear is in order. It would seem based on the cam card info that this is how you are fixed.

I usually replace the dist gear just so I know I'm matching "new to new" eliminating any chance of a wear pattern on the old dist gear giving me any fits.

Only other isue could be placement of the gear on the shaft ... but if the dist was in service prior to the cam swap ... you'd have to think placement is correct.

I would say that much wear should not be happening.

Best wishes and good luck

Yeah, lets us know what you find out. I'm running one of those Comp Cams too, with an old stock dist. gear. I don't have that many miles yet, but that is very disturbing.

Did you put in high volume or high pressure oil pump? If you did that's your problem. The pump works harder and the distributer gear is going to wear out because it needs to work harder to turn the pump. If you did this, put the stock pump back in with a new gear. When you get near 50% wear on the gear you'll get to a point where a couple teeth will break and the distributor will quit turning i.e. engine will not run.

PS the hyd cams I have used from Comp Cams worked very well with the cast stock gear. Over 100,000 miles and still going.

Got a response from Comp Cams already - excellent service. They say the Ford cast gear is not too god with a HV pump. They say their polymer
gear would be ideal or a Ford steel could be used.

Sounds like your cam does not have the "Cast Iron" band pressed on for the Dist drive. If it did they would not be talking "Steel Gear."

Presumably, they are implying that the steel cam drive is not damaged??

My steel gear for my 351C cost about $80.00

That polymer gear is $ 116 at Summit.
The cam card says nothing about the gear but I remember clearly that it was stated in the conversation with CC or I red it somewhere that this cam does not need a special gear.I need to call CC to discuss, I cannot remember how the drive gear in the cam looked like.

Crane makes steel gears for Ford's. They are about 65.00 at Summit.

But, I thought Ford had a steel gear for the 302 in the FRRP catalog.

Is there only 2 types of drive gears in hydraulic roller cams: steel( same material as the cam) and cast iron( pressed on cam)?
If so, which dist gear materials are suitable to use with each of these two?
