Changing a rear seal on a Top Loader....

The damn thing is leaking just enough out the tail housing to piss me off....can this be changed without pulling the trans? If so, where can I get the seal? Its in a 73 Mach 1. Thanks a lot!

yeas it can be changed, its pretty simple job. Make sure you get a quality seal, and that there is no grove on the seal surface of the yoke. If it still leaks, you may just have it a tad over full.

If the slipyoke feels loose, you'll also want to get a new tailshaft bushing. (same as a C4)

To change, you just remove the tailhousing, pop out the seal, drive out the old bushing, and press, or carefully drive the new one into position.

The best seals generally come from NAPA.

Good Luck!

if you can rock the yoke frome side to side, then you need to replace the bushing ..

it's pretty simple to do what you want, you will loose a lot of oil in the trans while doing this though.. but yust remember to refill it ..

1. remove the driveshaft
2. remove the shifter
3. remove the speedo cable
4. remove the bolts attaching the tailhouseing
5. remove the tail ..
6. remove the old seal and bushing (if required)
7. install the new seal and bushing
8. put it all back together ...

dont think it's anything more than that ..
