drag race alternator drive
Getting ready to put the 357 together, and I'm looking for a drive pulley for to drive the alternator. Cant use a stock 3 groove pulley as it will drive the alternator WAY too fast (like 32,000 rpm!) plus it sticks out too far and hits the radiator. I need s 4" or so crank pulley to drive the small 40 amp alternator. Where can I find one?

I dont know the diameter of the one I have on my cleveland, but it is from Moroso, and is a small diameter one groove pulley. Before I got it, I kept chucking the belt off, it was spinning WAY too fast with the stock 2 groove pulley. Since I got that pulley, I have yet to pitch a belt even coming out of the water box at 8k on the chip.

It doesn't have to be a Ford pulley. The GM stuff should fit.

First of all, sorry, I was wrong. It's not single groove, it's a double. I just ran outside to take a look and sure enough, 2 grooves. But both grooves are the 4" diameter.
The one I have is Moroso part number 64550.

I got a nice crank pulley from March industries. Smaller than stock, then mounted a GM 1 wire alternator on the passenger side, low on block. Never had any problems with belt throwing, or anything.
Works great. Round after round....Kinda like the eveready bunny...keeps on charging...............

This is one reason I switched to a 6 rib belt setup. I use a 5.6" crank pulley and a 2.1 (~pitch dia), so the alt spins at "only" 16,000 RPM at 6K. That's about as big as I can get and still get output at idle speed.

5.6" crank...2.1" alt...lets see, that'd be around 22,000 RPM @ the finish line. Beides, the alternator I have is one from a Kubota tractor, 40 amp, yet weighs 3 lbs and is smaller than any I've seen. Fits right under the water pump well. I might go with the moroso pulley after all..even though it's 2 groove, I think it'll fit ok. Chevy pulley? I thought the mounting pattern was different?

I have this nice dinky pulley, don't know who makes it, but it sure does turn things slow. Helped alot on the parasitic drain of the accessories, and will probably help your quest as well.

The shaft size on the Ford and GM alts, at least from the 70's and 80's, is the same.
