Ok here it is. (please excuse the lack of knowledge on this..my mind has slipped lately)
I have a set of 85 351w heads. heads are in great condition..barely 45k miles on them.
I plan on porting them and installing them on a 65 289. reason..a. hardened seats.
b. already tapped for
screw in studs
c. bigger intake
runners???
Question....what has to be done to install roller rockers on these heads? I know some machine work is required IE milling down for the pedestal height...but how much and what type 3/8..7/16??
What compression am I looking at for this application. Should the heads be milled and will this change the rocker arm geometry.
Planning on 1.6 roller rockers. New springs and a semi mild cam 260H maybe.
Compression I want to stay in the 9:0.1 ratio. Current block for the install is a 65 289 with .030 sotck pistons.
Yes I know the build does not look like a strip burner but this is for the wife's vert and she does need anymore power than that.

Generally the Windsors use 3/8 studs and you mill .230" for the guide plates. You say they have been tapped for screw in studs already, then I would do some measuring against another set of heads to see if they were already cut for guide plates.

I'm guessing the chambers on those heads are LARGE. Even with flat top pistons in the 289, your compression could be below what you want.

Best be sure of the chamber size before you get too carried away.

yea the heads are already threaded but that is for the stock rocker are studs...or am I totally confused. I thought all 80 and up 5.0 and 5.7 heads were tapped..the ole press in studs went bye bye.
Yea the measuring would be a wise idea.

I take it they are threaded 5/16-18?

You could use the stud kit from crane for mild cams....

hey larry,,,thanks. I apperciate the effort.
The heads are E5AE CA..probably nothing special but the 289's are worn out. Cost effective kinda thing goes on here. If ya know what I mean.

HI Blistic
If the chambers are too big your compression will be very low so you might have to mill the heads as well to get the comp. up. Or I'm sure that the 289's could be fixed with new valve guids and valve seats if they were that bad?? Could'nt they just a though

If it's not a performance build, I would just recommend a set of CompCams Magnum roller tip rockers with the valve guide cast in. They are very good pieces and I have ran a set for 10 years, including many 7000 rpm blasts and never had one little problem with them. They are very tough, and cost effective compared to alum. roller rockers and guide paltes.

Just a thought.

main thing here guys is down time of the car..
I'm still getting mine back to square one.
I need her's to be dependable and that is also here main transportation.
Basically two car family and working in two different directions from town. So the 289 heads are not to be trashed but saved for a later date. I picked these 5.0 heads up for that very reason. I'll have to dig out the books and get some comp ratio's this evening. I think the comp will be around 8 to 9 but there is only one sure fire way to tell. So I'll do some computing and mesuring.
Thanks for tip on the cast roller tips.
I've found some proform forged roller for $156 w /locks..does seem that bad...but of course the guide plates and then the hardened push rods etc...$600 down the tube..
I think her liscense plate is going to be HIMAINT ...or MONEYPIT...
