I know a bit about powder coating. You can powdercoat aluminum pieces.. my timing cover, brackets, pulleys, and thermostat housing are all powdercoated with an Eastwood unit. Now as far as powdercoating a chromed piece I believe it would be better to strip the plating off first but if the chrome is in good shape I don't see why you can't coat right over it. Also, if your aluminum trim is anodized I've heard that it's best strip off the anodizing but it's not absolutely necessary.

for the best results you should have the chrome stripped or acid bathed and yes you can powdercoat aluminum parts. if its a good shop ask them if they can strip or send the chrome stuff out to have it acid washed (stripped). most shops will clean parts and make sure they can be done. i would get everything stripped and cleaned for better results. i deal with a powdercoating shop through work

Thanks Jeremy!
Are you happy with the Eastwood system? I'm debating on weather to farm it out or invest in a kit.

The Eastwood kit is great for doing it, but if I was going to do bigger things I'd probably get a larger gun more aimed at professional use. My only problem has been finding a suitable oven to bake with. We're using a scratch and dent sale home oven and all the other pieces I wanted to coat won't fit! I wanted to coat my Stealth intake and some steel rims. We're thinking of building some kind of home-fabbed setup someday.

I work for Harley - Davidson and the plant I work at also holds a HUGE powercoat operation.

I know you can powercoat aluminum because all Harley motors have aluminum cases that are powercoated at our plant.

The chrome I'm not sure about though since I work in the engine test department.
