modified oil pans?

has anyone ever added sump to their existing oil pans? i have seen it done before on a 351w i tore down. i got a 302 pan id like to modify to accept 7 quarts for hv oil pump. i can buy one for $170 but would like to save $$ and i like fabricating things myself anyway. besides im a metal fabricator by trade so im able to weld and shape metal. i know i would have to mock up my headers and starter and make sure everything clears under the car. i would like to know if anyone has tried it and possibly get some advice. and by the way my subscription ran out today so i renewed it and i changed my name from jamesm to james306. thanks

You being a fabircator you make thing fit all day so just do it and modify the pickup tube at the same time. Put a baffle in it to keep oil from sloshing around and that it clears the pickup tube and your home free.

I have done it a couple of times for oil pans and also do my own trans pans, it is easy if you can weld thin sheet metal with the skill it takes to have no leaks. I like to find a aftermarket pan that will work for my purpose and then just take some measurements and start to build. works out great and way cheaper than buying unless you figure in the labor you spend on it yourself. Then there is always the sense of pride in doing it yourself. I like that. If you need any measurements mine are for a Moroso deep front sump SBF and for a Milodon rear sump BBF fox swap pan I have also made deep sump C4 pans with a filter extension. Good Luck

Coolfalcon,
Sorry no pictures of the C4 trans pan and extension. The best I can do is try to describe it to you. What I do is use the Bronco filter it has a rubber grommit in the bottom that is for a tubular extension to the bottom of the pan. On the Bronco pan there is a sort of well in the bottom of the pan and this extension just extends down to the bottom of it and has a couple of cut outs, one on each side to draw the fluid in through. Now with my deep C4 pans I use this filter and I make a tubular extension that is about the same except I weld a thin sheetmetal disk to it to act as a retainer for the pickup. Then use stock pan with 5-6 holes cut in the bottom. I make sure that one of the holes is inline with the pickup extension and that the disk on the pickup is larger than the hole this way when the pan is bolted up the pickup can not fall out of the grommit. I usually make the pan about double the depth of stock panfill type pans. This is about all that I do. I like to add some bead rolls to the bottom for stiffness and always add a drain plug as well. They look real nice and work great.

the top is a C5 pan with a 2in wide slot cut across the bottom in the back of the pan so under acceleration it keeps the oil up top.The bottom is a C4 pan
